How to make the most of SEO after Google Instants

I thought I would start a thread to focus on positive steps we can take to adjust our processes to work well with Google Instants.

I will start the ball rolling:

1. Make your title eye-catching. This is something you should do always, but now that the google user has several pages of info flashing up, you need to grab their attention to stop them typing and get them clicking your site. I sometimes use non standard characters ►►►Like This ◄◄◄in title to grab attention.

2. When choosing longtails to optimize for, follow the path it will take a user to get to your content. Type the phrase in letter by letter. If the user sees several pages of highly targetted information and sites offering same info/service before they get to the entire term then consider looking at a different term to optimize for. I am sure several long tails will still be very valid and get traffic from people searching for diversity.

These are just a couple off top of my head, if I think of any more I will come back.

Anyone got number 3?

    3. Get high powered rankings through the back door.

Lets say I am #1 for "widgets cheap", and after the keyword "widgets", "widgets cheap" is the first suggestion, then whenever someone types is "widgets" they will see your site at the top until they hit enter (but if the info is already there then after a while I think people will stop hitting enter or clicking search).

I have just identified loads of very high power short tails in my niches that I can hijack by getting onto a much easier keyword. (This made my day lol, I hope they dont change the way it displays)

      Adapting! What a concept!

I've been using #2 and #3 for quite a while anyway. (I'll bet you have too) 1 year ago I instantly
raised by google rank by typing in the first of my keyword and let google give me suggestions. I immediately optimized for that 3 word phrase.

Amazing how good seo stands the test of time.

    4. Following on, you can identify some short entries that can feed off longer terms, for example people who are entering a search for Walmart, if you optimise on a string beginning with Wal..... and the niche you are focusing on will give you early exposure to those who might otherwise have gone to Walmart for your niche. Incidentally, I think this advantage will be short lived and only open to those who react quickly as soon Walmart and the like will have this covered themselves. Happy hunting

  • Honestly, I think Instant search is going to be a short lived product offering. I myself as well as several average users were turned off by this "feature".

If it does stick around, you should just find out what google recommends for your keywords and build on those targetted "instant" keyword searches.
