url canonicalization

I just found this problem and not sure how to address it. I purchased a site a year ago, the backlinks were created for URL http://www.site.com/

I have been creating backlinks for http://site.com (without the "www"), so I have been diluting my efforts.

There is no server redirect, both the URL's end up at the "www" and non "www" version.

When I search in google for my main keywords, the "www" version of the site shows up.

Is there anything I can do to fix this issue?

  • Now that you have done plenty of backling to your non www why don't you just set up a redirect and just backlink to www from now on?
  • Google is showing the "www" version of my site for main keyword. So how will setting up a redirect help?
