125000 inlinks?????

So I'm working on building my websites backlinks (see sig), I've never tried to promote one of my websites before so I'm still learning.. but..

i've been reading that for #1 google spot for a specific term, you need something like 2000+ backlinks.

well I was just checking out the competition and noticed that the #2 website for the search result has 1500 pages and 125000 inlinks (according to yahoo site explorer). This same page LOOKS LIKE CRAP! and i cant figure out how it got so many, but more importantly, how the heck am i supposed to overtake that or at least get anywhere NEAR it? as of now, my website shows 0 backlinks, but i've made signitures in all the forums i am registered to, also i've submitted my site to a few indexing things..

do i really have to get 125000 inlinks to take over that spot? the search term is NOT popular at all, and for google to even auto complete the term, you have to have it almost typed out fully..... any help would be appreciated.

If the site is on the 2nd spot means there are other factors too which you need to consider. Check the domain age and also the content age in archive.org this also is taken into account heavily by google while ranking as it has become pretty much easier nowadays to gain large number of backlinks in short period of time, so everything has to go hand in hand, domain age, content age, value of content, visitor activity, backlinks, diversity of backlinks......it can go on and on.

Try to vary your backlinks too if you can- for example 200 links from Ezinearticles won't be as good as 200 different links from a bunch of good sites.

I've seen hundreds of websites with backlinks no more than 100s outrank websites with 1000s of backlinks. Yes, backlinks are important, but there are other important factor, such as on-page SEO. Does the website have the keywords in the title, tag, h1, meta description, meta keywords, URL, and so on. Hope that helps. =)

The quality of the backlinks is much more important than the quantity.

You will see many sites with hundreds of backlinks rank better then sites with thousands. It is much more important to get quality backlinks from high PR pages.

  sorry im a noob, but how does one get high quality backlinks? is it something i can do myself or do i just have to pray my site gets a popular post on it & people willingly link it on their popular sites?

Sounds like the No.2 spot is using some form of link farm. Try to check out the quality of backlinks and reverse engineer

  I have seen domains that had 50.000 backlinks only 6 months after registration. So it's definitely possible. I know some backlink techniques that will give you 300-500 backlinks per day.

Not only backlinks but there are lots of other factors to get high ranking in the search engines like domain age, quality links, obl on that sites etc so i think you should take care of that factors as well.. good luck

  It is more about the quality of the links than the quanity. Try focusing on building some quality backlinks to your site through articles or posts on high pr sites.

but how come you got 2 PR, having quality back link is one of the main criteria to get rank by Google. can I have your site to check.

I am using magic submitter for creating my backlinks profile and backlink index express for indexing all the backlinks, so google can find all my backlinks naturally. But also take care for creating the types of backlink. DO not jump over 1000s of backlink in short time. Do not use same anchor text for all the backlinks. Do not get backlinks from same type of sites e.g forums, blogs. Mix it up.... And after creating some good backlinks use backlink index express to get your backlink index. You will see the result soon. Use google webmaster to track the ranking for your website.

target variations of the keywords maybe to get some clients and then social network your company out there, try writing great content for natural backlinks.

No, it is not necessary to get as many links as your competitor has to overcome him but instead the point which matters is "quality is more important than quantity".Build quality backlinks from high pr pages and believe me even 100 good links can do that for you!

  Pull up the warriorforum search function and run a search on "high quality backlinks". We have a gazillion threads on this topic alone. You won´t have any problems finding relevant information.

dearidiot (sorry), yahoo shows links in a page-based mode, so that site might have one sidewide link from a huge website consisting of 100000 pages. So, do not look at the number, look where these all links are coming from.
In current G SERP, links are not definitive factor at all, there are many others - domain age, content originality and regularity of updates.

Check your competitors on the last two abovementioned issues and do better then them.
