Best Practices of Clean-url/Friendly-url

Hi there guys!

I am creating a new website from scratch and this is not the first time doing one. I want my new website's url to be visible or friendly to most search engines and
I came across to this sitename.com/aricles/anotherpage. Is creating another directory to organize my articles is the best practice?
Would it be better if I just take off that directory and have the title of that article instead?


What about long/short urls? Dashes or underscores? which ones are better?

And also, I want to convert my website to a clean-url one. I have like hundreds of old links and I want it to redirect to its clean-url counter part. Can someone tell me how to do this right?

    The subfolder is more important if the topic of your site is not tightly focused. For example, if you had a large site about "health" rather than "how to cure athlete's foot", then you might consider using subfolders to organize "health" into multiple topics. Otherwise, just follow the example of WF (and most blogs) and have a URL with the title or keywords for each page.

      that makes sense. what about redirecting my old url to new url? Hence, I am not redirecting to a new domain. Links to a tutorial would be appreciated.
