Google Local Listings Strategy

I have been googling around trying to sort out things and understand how really to optimized my sites to put at the top of google local listings.

Is there a strategy how it was done? What I understand if you really want to put your sites in canada listing, you need to host it in canada. Is that true?

So probably my questions is too vague enough. I am just curious how other guys doing it easily.

    Are you located in Canada?

    You need to know how much competition you have in the area where you want to dominate the local listings - then you can plan your strategy. You won't need a sledge hammer to crack a walnut if you are only up against a handful of competitors.

    By local do you mean Province or City?
