Is SEO equally relevant for blogs too, as it is for product selling websites?

Hi All,

I have a blog based on android, which as you might be knowing, a mobile OS by the Google. My blog's name is theandroidsoul dot com.

I am doing very short reviews of android apps on my blog. Each post is generally 200 words, and sometimes I do a round up article which goes about 800-1000 words with 10-15 apps included therein. I would also do hacks/tips/tricks/news etc in the future.

Moreover, my blog is around 4 months old now and got some 4874 absolutely unique visitors this month as shown by Google analytics. I think that is too low since I have around 150 posts published on my site now and traffic and ad generation is too low. Am I right?

That was a brief about my website.

Since I haven't done any SEO related stuff for the blog so far, I am putting this new thread over here.

So, my question is, what is appropriate level of SEO for a blog (since it is not a regular website meant to sell products or do marketing of any sort)?

I have little knowledge about SEO. So I wanna ask whether I should pay too much attention on the SEO for my blog. Or it is better to just keep posting new content on the regular basis, which is a must for blogs with the intention of money making.

Or simply put, whether SEO is all that important for blog as it is for websites the latter are too much involved in selling products and marketing and all that?

Apart form posting great content regularly on the blog, please let me know which of the following I should concentrate the most:
  • SEO optimized wordpress theme (FYI, I am using a wordpress theme from the elegant themes dot com)
  • Keywords (haven't done any research on this)
  • Meta descriptions and Meta tags (don't know much about them but have put in keywords based on what I've seen on similar websites, using the tool at wmtips dot com)
  • Videos of apps (Not done thus far)
  • Screenshots - I generally give one big image (a panorama image of 2 images) of width 650 pixels. Shall I put 5-6 images for each post? BTW, I always fill up the ALT tag of the images.
  • Should I look into the SEO softwares or schemes that promise backlinks, keywords, tags, etc
  • What about softwares for directory submissions, etc
  • Any other option of yours is welcomed.

The main thing is: Do the blog need same level of SEO as the websites?

Thanks to everyone who gave his/her time to this post.

All SEO is about, is determing how you want your blog to be found. If you are happy with your traffic just by how you are found on your current content, then great. If you want traffic because of organic searches on "android" or "Google android", then that is what you should SEO your site for. In that case, since you are up against Google for the #1 spot probably, it would take quite a bit of work, with no guarantee you could ever rank higher than Google for their own product.

I think you should focus on adding quality content on a regular basis. That should be number one for your site.

I would also recommend you add videos and post them on YouTube. Open a YouTube channel and add videos. You should find a way to make the people watching videos click through to your site. I am sure that using Video will be very helpful in gaining more traffic.

You are targeting a very competitive niche so you should be doing SEO if you want more free traffic. You should pick a blog post every week or 2 or whatever you decide and create anchor text links using Blog commenting, Forums and guest posting on other related blogs. On top of creating links, these methods will also bring more targeted traffic to your site.

Also try to focus on long tail keyword with your post titles. I don't know if you are already doing that, but if you will take the time and research before posting your posts you may find good long tail keywords to focus on in specific posts that you can rank for easily and get more free traffic.

Your theme is pretty nice and I see you have Twitter and Facebook so you are good with that. You should also try giving away a free report of some sort in order to get more people to sign up on to your email list.

To finish this I can say that it looks like you are doing pretty good and I am sure you will be doing even better very soon.

Thanks @D Baker. I really appreciate your view. Will create a Youtube channel too, for sure.
