Ranking for different keywords in same article.

Hi there

I'd just like a little guidance with regards to keyword ranking from articles.

I am just wondering if you are able to rank for different keywords, for the same domain within the same article, or whether you would recommend linking to a different page for each keyword withing the same article.

For example, ideally I'd like to link to 'mydomain.com' for both 'keyword1' and 'keyword2' in the resource box, however I am unclear as to whether the domain name will get link juice for both of the keywords or just one will be favoured.

Can I do this or should I always link keywords in the same resource box to different pages?

Hope that makes sense and apologies for the newbie style question.

  • Yes, you can rank for both keywords from the same article but you will probably have better results getting to #1 if you stick with 1 keyword.

    I've tried this many times myself (with up to 5 keywords phrases) and do manage to get traffic for all, but not ranked as high as I want for any of them.

    That being, said I haven't done any definitive tests on it so that's just a "gut" feeling from my observations.

  • Yes, you can rank a site for two different keywords using links from the same articles. The competition for each keyword might be different, so the results may vary from keyword to keyword.

    Ideally you should have a page on the site optimized for one keyword each and send links to that page and the home page (double listings are a nice bonus). But many people don't do that and just send all of their links to the home page for multiple keywords.

    Search engines do not favour one keyword over another if they are in equal numbers. If you have 50 articles with "keyword 1" and "keyword 2" then the search engines will "see" your site equally for each keyword (Not PR as this depends on the competitive nature of each keyword). If you have 40 articles with "keyword 1" and 10 articles with "keyword 2" then they will select "keyword 1" as the "primary keyword".

    Make sense?

    Generally people use the main page for their "primary" keyword and other sub pages for "other" keywords as attempting to write good valuable content for real people is hard enough with one keyword let alone two!

    Also by using two keywords in your article you "dilute" the strength of that article i.e. Having 50 articles having two different keyword means each article "shares" that page while creating 50 article with "keyword 1" twice give you 100 links.

    • I agree with the above - you will get results for all keywords, but utilising the others in their own right in separate articles would be much better as the SERPs have to distinguish which is the most relevant keyword per page / article.

    Thanks for the quick replies - that all makes perfect sense.

    I'm now leaning towards the one keyword link per article and writing an extra article for additional keywords. At least I then know that it will have the maximum effect.

  • yep, takes more time but the results will come if you write an article per keyword (long tail if possible..)

    • I say go for it. It's good to get advice and guidance from others. But it's best to try it for yourself so you know for sure if it works or not.

      I myself believe you can do that and it will treat each keyword separately.

      It also helps to keep your anchor text changed up so you don't have one type of anchor text pointing to the same url.

      I'd recommend two keywords per page to help with breaking your keyword and pages up.
