Article title with no keywords?

Once in a while I'm faced with a fantastic article title that has none of my main keywords. The title works well dramatically and it will attract attention, two very important requirements of a title.

But without keywords it's terrible for SEO, another very important aspect of a title.

So what do I do? If publishing on my website it's easy to put a subtitle or anything else I want in <h1> tags.

But if it's going on EZA or other directory I have no influence over this.

So what's the bottom line here? Should I use ONLY titles with my keywords, even if it's not nearly as good from a writing viewpoint?

  • I would go with your compelling title. You do include your keywords in the keyword field, and if you don't make a habit of creating these keyword-less titles, I think you'll stand out and still get lots of attention to your article (especially if you do a little social media marketing).

      ...think outside the box and try to incorporate your keyword into an exciting title.

    • It's fine that you don't want to include the keyword on your title. If you find it more attractable without it, why not? If you could insert your keyword your article at least on the first paragraph, try to. But if it will really affect the quality, eliminate all your keywords at all. I gotta go with Adriana's idea too. Just place your keywords in the keyword or meta fields.

  • The article must have compelling title which compel readers to click and read. And should not be insanely stuffed with keywords, spreading the spammy ordure.

    if you place your keywords in your article title so its good for you because you will get this keyword ranking with drive traffics on your website with title must be need quality and attractive.
  • Creating quality content and the text surrounding the keyword must be relevant, the title and the content must be informative and useful to others for them to revisit again your site.

  • What's the point in writing the articles, without keywords. Unless you run an NGO website. Keywords are extremely important, can't miss out on that.
  • I see alot of titles written like this:

    Keyword - Title Here

    It kind of feels like the first part is giving you the 'subject' of the article and shouldn't interfere with your compelling title.
  • even if the title says UFOs landed on the front lawn of the white house no one will find it unless they are looking for UFO or white house information. Even on Ezines most of your traffic is going to come hopefully from search engine traffic so theres no point in not using your keywords. If you said this was on Digg I'd say yes go with the dramatic it might help your story to go viral but for what you stated theres no reason I can see to not target you keywords.


    Bottom line if the end user of most of your content is going to be read by search engine traffic go with your keywords always. If looking to go viral through other channels than search engines go with dramatic/controversial
  • I do both! Sometimes I submit articles that contain my keywords and other times I might go with a more exciting, attention grabbing title, even if it doesn't contain the keywords. The exciting title articles still get lots of views and probably have better click through rates, especially if the resource box has a attention grabbing call to action line.

    So I don't think it's necessary to always use keywords in your title, without them you are still building backlinks and you will still get views and visitors from that article.

  • You should use long tail titles with the keywords in it. That way, chances of people finding your article are way higher.

    • Try writing some useful Article even if they don't contain any keyword. Atleast you will be gaining some rank. lol
    • I cannot see the point in you writing an article with no keywords in the title. Who are you trying to target then? So if by chance people view the article, do you just want any odd group of people?

      You want to be attracting targeted traffic at all times, otherwise its a waste of time.

      Also, are you not interested in search engines directing traffic to you? If not, then you're good to go on no keywords at all.

      I don't just want any odd kind of traffic, you want targeted traffic with qualified prospects coming to you. That is the whole point of attraction marketing guys.

    • Maybe I would have to see the title you are talking about. I think you have to put the keyword in the title. When in doubt, spell it out. (haa! I just made that up!...yeah, I know, terrible.)
