Is this a good SEO tactic?

For example if you search "how to create a website" #1 is 2createawebsite.com. If I were to buy 2makeacake.com (example) would it have an advantage ranking for "how to make a cake"

  • In my experience, having keywords in the domain or an exact match has helped tremendously.

    • Yor website can still rank if it has most of the keywords in

    • Keywords that has low competition and many searches is equal to money keywords. That's what I've learnt
  • I honestly don't think that keywords in the domain are as important as everyone makes them out to be, unless you're trying to rank the index page of your site for your target keyword.

You can rank individual pages on your website just aslong as they have the keyword in the URL and title of the page.

It's just as easy to rank flamingowings.com/howtomakeacake.html as it is to rank howtomakeacake.com

All that really matters is the backlinks.

    • I'm with Carl on this only in addition to backlinks,
you need to create blended pages and those pages,
along with your site, need activity.

Branding is probably more important than the exact
domain keyword match, unless you're targeting one
product or service and nothing else on your site.

An exact match on the domain will get you ranked
faster, but you'll get bumped quickly by those who
are using the blended search approach.
  • keyword is the main thing in seo. you should concerntrate on keyword. for get high pr.
  • Keywords in your domain is a big boost in rankings from search engines. Take marketingmyinternet.com. If you were to type in "internet marketing", sites such as marketingmyinternet.com will pop up higher on this sole fact that other sites that dont have keywords in the domain. Remember, SEO is not about cheating the search engines. SEO is about being relevant to your customers. If you are more relevant than the next guy then you will rank higher than them. This includes your domain and the words that are in it.
  • Hi,

Target the main keywords which you looking for to optimize. work off page as much you can try build back links, social networking all.
  • i think putting your keyword in URL is the best place and according to your example these phrases are effective to get accurate data.

  • Have keywords in the main domain hepls SEO strategy, but, especially, you should have a good domain authority to be more important for Google. Then, you should optimizer your URLs to posicionate your site by the keywords that you are interesting, including than keywords, furthermore, in title, H1, H2, content...
  • Exact match domains aren't necessary for rankings. You'd have a very small benefit from that domain name.

    • If the competition is too strong than I don't think having an exact match domain will help you much.

You should focus on building links and writing quality content. That is the sure way of achieving top rankings.
  • The majority of business' I have worked with would never consider having anything other than their company name in the domain name no matter how I have tried to persuade them otherwise.

This has led to some pretty unwieldy domain names that contain not one word about what they do or where they do it.

This fact has had little impact on their rankings because all the other SEO activities ARE pushing the site based on what they do and where they do it.

It is hard to explain to a business that no one knows the name of their company (their baby that they have spent months nurturing and naming), it is what they do that people online will be searching for.

In a recent meeting I saw the clients eyes visibly glaze over when I got to that part of the presentation.

So FORTUNATELY the domain name can be whatever, as long as it has strong SEO behind it.
  • I'm with D Baker on this one as of now, content is king. Keep writing useful and quality contents and you are sure to boost your site's ranking

    • If you have a very specific keywords (related to the product or service), than you always stand a better chance to beat your competitors.
  • I say, its an advantage.
  • Keywords in the domain do help a whole lot as others have said..Just make sure that you focus on only 1, maybe 2 if they are highly related, keywords per page. Meaning if you bought makeacaknow.com and that domain was your target, only send that specific anchor text to that page, your homepage, as to not dilute your profile. Just make other pages for seperate keywords wih seperate anchor text links going to them..
But yes, if you can get an exact match that is great, otherwise tacking on a little something to the end of the domain is still ok..and works great.

    Cheers

  • From what I know of the Caffeine change, there will be more emphasis on URLs than before Caffeine.

However, you will get better results with a good title and quality content.

Case in point, my website has absolutely no SEO value for anything, yet my title, and related content, put my site on the third page of Google (out of 31 million) for SEO FAQ even though I only have around 10 posts about SEO.

EDIT: I just checked the search term "holistic SEO" and my site outranks hotlisticseo.com for some reason... Go figure :/

URL is important, but its not the be-all-end-all.
  • tomakeacake.com will have more chances than 2makeacake.com
and yes having the keyword in the domain name is very heavy in SEO.

    • Totally agree, I got a few domains with exact/almost exact matches and they rank well better and with lot less SEO (backlinks)
  • the URL is paramount.
  • Now that is something to be thought upon. Nice observation. I don't think that should make a difference because 2 and to has no relation.
  • well this is a controversial topic... but I've done a lot of keyword research and lots of sites with the kw in the domain and just a few backlinks with the kw anchor text puts them in the 1st 3 serps... so... I guess it DOES affects in a postive way.

  • Keyword in your domain name is a good SEO strategy, but don't forget that your website is for visitors not for Search engines, that's why your website domain must sound good and make sense. Besides such biggests brands and sites like godaddy, google, yahoo, amazon, etc, didn't reach a success due to a keyword in the URL...
