I think the word is so common that it cannot or should not be trademarked

Other companies have tried this such as Monster, the consumer cable company. The result was making Monster Cable look like a big bully and did considerable damage to their brand. Read more about it here: Monster Cable Products Inc vs. Mike Shkolnik

One day I'm going to be the first to patent a method for mammals to intake oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. All you b#@@s are going to have to pay me license fees.

It's a general word and either won't be accepted as a trademark or won't stand up in court - but hey, who wants to defend themselves against facebook in court?

Face should not be trademarked. And, it isn't. facebook is trademarked, and I don't understand what's wrong in it?

The problem with facebook and all those other big companies isn't that they're trying to be jackholes, they're simply doing it because america's copyright laws are ridiculous

If facebook didn't do this, then someone could come along and make facenovel. The facebook would sue them and facenovel's lawyer would say "Hey, there are plenty of other face-whatever websites and facebook never made a peep over them. They have no right's anymore."

And the judge would be forced to agree. Companies are forced to be overzealous with copyright because the laws here are downright stupid

The point I assume is they are trying to trademark it in relation to online social networking, not just to trademark the word as their own. It's all about context.

They are also trying to stop the "_____book" sites popping up.
Comes with the territory of being a big company. They are trying
to protect the integrity of the brand. Nothing mean or nefarious.
I know they sued teachbook. Makes sense to me. Putting "book" at
the end of a social site would indeed look like copy-catting.

You cannot trademark common words. But you can stop people from
using a word in a business name if it encroaches on your brand. That is,
if you can prove any "damage."

Some companies look the other way, some don't. Funny thing, google
is many times chastised here, and yet, they are the biggest purveyor
of free and open, including the use of some of their brands.
