Help me, tell me the potential of my website!

Hi all,

This is not an advertisement, so please do not delete it.

I am really worried these days. Three months ago I set up a website TopCompanyJobs . com. And I began to make money from Google Adsense. Last month I thought that I could make a living on it, so I said goodbye to my boss.

But, util now I can only make less than $ 100 per month! I am going to die of starvation! So would you please tell me the potential of my website? Can I really make a living on it? Otherwise I have to search a job. You know that the economy is so bad that it is very hard for me to find a good one!

Brif introduction to my site:
it is a job search engine with 600,000+ jobs from all over the world.
It is about three months old and the PR of the home page is 3
the alexa rank is about 2,000,000
the server is base in China and my customer are mainly from English speaking countries.

I need you to answer me this question: Can I make a living on it? Yes or not? Why? What's your suggestions?

At this time I could say it could not be a source of your living but there is a possible big impact if you will do some marketing effort in it. Don't lose hope. You just need more traffic. The adsense code placement is good but if the traffic is very low then possibly the click through is very low also. Try TLA and add some books related to jobs from clickbank and cj.com. And most especially duplicate it but get more sources. What source is your job listing? Is it hotjobs/yahoo jobs? make more jobs..I think some job sites have RSS option so you can easily embed it in your site.

You can also try to add a resources section that will display articles and good products..it can easily target traffic from search engines.

By now you may have heard of the latest PPC tool called "Efficient PPC" by Felix Leshno. According to Felix, Efficient PPC is "a smart PPC campaigns builder for Google AdWords, hundreds of pre-listed keywords for your campaigns, and an easy to use keyword lists editor." Efficient PPC is said to be a competitor to Speed PPC, but with more features.

        OK,the tool is good.

But what I am using is adsense instead of adwords.

You mean that I can NOT? I will not lost hope. Yes you are right, I need more traffic. Last month the traffic increased all the way, but this month I have no luck. I don't know the reason. Google have indexed almost 60,000 of my pages but the traffic from google is only 100-300 daily.

I collect the jobs from companies' career pages using a program. I think the number is big enough: there are more than 600,000 jobs in total.

I still want to make sure of one thing: if I work diligently, how much can I earn from this site per month?

Peter, your site is a scrapper site in that it scraps data from other websites and have very little original content. To be honest, search engines such as Google take a very dim view of scrapper sites. Scrapper sites may have worked well a few years ago but not now. It is entirely possible that things may get worse and your site is banned and deindexed altogeter. I had a bunch of scrapper sites that used to earn over $1000 per month but are now down to less than $50.

Therefore you must have a fall back position should things get worse. The only thing you can try is to decrease your reliance on search engine traffic but this is difficult and could be very expensive. What you need is to attract recurrent visitors. I would definitetly advise against selling text links because it could make the situation much worse with Google.

      Hi Derek,

Thank you for your reply, but I can't agree with you. I don't think my site is a scrapper site. It has its value: it collects jobs information from thousands of web pages, and the users can find them all using the search functionality provided by my site. It is convenient.

And what's more, my site is very similar to indeed . com. Almost no body will call indeed . com a scrapper site. And indeed . com has not been deindexed by Google, you can search "site:indeed.com".

However, I am not sure. Any body know the truth?

        Hi Peter,

Maybe someday you can make a living with this site, who knows?

You mention indeed.com. Have you tried comparing search functionality between your site and theirs, or hotjobs, or any other major job portal?

From a usability standpoint, your sites search functionality is not very good. It's nowhere near as "convenient" as other sites.

On other job sites I can search by city, state, and zip. With yours, the only option is searching with a city name. And if someone from my hometown typed in the city name, the results aren't even necessarily the right city because there are dozens of cities with that name across the U.S.

You have a lot of work to do to compete well with the more established job sites that give users a lot more than your site does.

IMO, it doesn't matter if your site has 5 million job listings. Quantity doesn't equal quality.

I'm not an expert by any means, but if in addition to earning a living off of adsense or other cpa revenue, you actually want to provide a useful site for your visitors, you definitely have some work ahead of you.

Please take no offense, but as a user, I could never recommend your site to someone searching for a job. This is just some friendly constructive criticism.

I wish you the best of luck.

          Thanks to Chris Bailey,

Yes, I know, nothing is a guarantee, I have to work hard to prove that I have the ability to succeed.

I have to confess that my site is no match for indeed.com and yahoo hot jobs. It's not as powerful as them, and it is too young, maintained by only one person.

But, my site has a big advantage over indeed.com and yahoo hotjobs: At TopCompanyJobs.com, we collect jobs only from company career pages. We do not collect jobs from career sites. This is based upon our experience that company career pages have the most accurate, updated, and descriptive job postings.

For example: indeed.com collect jobs from careerbuilder.com and monster.com, but jobs on careerbuilder.com can be duplicated with jobs on monster.com. User searching on indeed.com may get a lot of duplicated information. TopCompanyJobs.com only collect jobs from companies such as IBM and Microsoft, you know that jobs at IBM will never be duplicated with jobs at Microsoft. So jobs on TopCompanyJobs.com are all unique. This is my BIG advantage.

I will continue to improve my site and I will let you all know my progress.

          Best Regards,

          Peter

It's definitely a scrapper site... And if it has it's value then why hasn't Google indexed it higher? It doesn't matter the information or how useful it is, if it collects data from thousands of sources then it is a scrapper site.

You have to think user experience and when I go to that page it looks daunting to say the least. Employ some dam coding so users can select a country then province, etc... This will free up some space to put good content about job hunting, resume writing etc.

Throw it in a good looking style blog and add original content.

Google owns the internet! and when you come here asking for advice and opinions why do you keep defending yourself..?

You need to have an open mind and realize that this is just our opinion and oh yeah, we are consumers too and if we view this as a scrapper site then hey probably everyone else does too (including Google) so maybe that's why it's not going so well.

To pin your entire livelihood on that site is a mistake at least in the way it is right now. If you don't want to take advice or hear opinions then don't post here.

It's like you post with your question in hopes that you can get the "Feel good about your website" comments but hey it's junk and the sooner you realize that you need to change something with it the better, otherwise keep going and find out the hard way.

            I'm speaking from experience.

Top Company Jobs is a phrase searched 28 times a month in Google. If you type in Google "top company jobs", you get 6210 answers of which you are the first. The first for 28 searches. You have to look for better keywords or use another sources of publicity.

A page normally takes 9-12 months to "mature", but working in it. See problogger.net

Thank you for your reply! Yes, I have noticed that very few people search the keyword "top company jobs". But my site is also optimized for other keywords, for example: "jobs in China", "manager jobs" etc.

My website is three months old. Maybe I have to wait until it become "mature"? For now, I want to know what will happen when it is mature? Can I make enough money to make a living?

Peter, can you tell me whether it is your traffic that has plummeted or just your Adsense earning? The main issue would be whether you have been slapped a penalty of some sort. As I can see, your site is still completely indexed.

Thank you Derek, you are so warm-hearted.
There is no secret about my site:
      1. It has 200 - 400 unique visitor every day
      2. daily Page impressions 500 - 1000
      3. CTR about 2%
      4. I make $1 - $6 every day,

You can see from the statistics that
      1. the traffic is not so good. (compared to the 60,000 indexed pages on Google)
      2. the adsense price is low. less than $0.2.

      candidate problems:
      1. my server is based in China while my customers are mostly from USA and Canada
      2. the website is too new. only three months old.

I can't believe that a website with more than 700,000 pages in total and 60,000 pages indexed by google gets so few visitors and so little income.

      Any opinions are welcomed!

Your pages was not optimized that is why there are only few visitors per day. Why not create several copies of that site add something in the pages to make it partially unique? If you can add more traffic by optimizing, link building and bookmarking then $300/month per site can easily be achieve and not include there the clickbank sales and other sponsorship.. my approximate is from adsense and TLA alone.

Thank you for you reply! I have done a lot of SEO work. But I did little link building and bookmarking work.I think I can get more traffic by doing these two.

And your suggestion "Why not create several copies of that site add something in the pages to make it partially unique" is especially useful! I can make another similar one and make it looks unique and then I can easily double my income!

For now, adsense is the only money maker for me. I will try other TLA and clickbank! Thank you for your suggestions, I owe you a lot of thanks!

    Peter,

In all honesty, you will not be able to make a solid income from that site for years to come... so I would recommend looking for a job. But don't take this as me telling you to give up. You just need to have realistic expectations for a newbie website.

No one here can tell you how to turn that site into a goldmine. The obvious general answer is attract A LOT more visitors, which might include: purchasing a better domain name, doing article marketing, social bookmarking, increasing the quality of your site's content, building lots of back links, viral marketing, blogging, finding affiliate programs that pay more than Google, serious SEO, PPC, etc.

All of the above -- if done diligently -- might get you close to earning a real income, but it will take time (months and possibly years) to accomplish. On offense, but your mindset right now alone tells me this site can't earn $1000+/mo. You need to lead. You should be innovating and finding niche solutions, telling us how to generate traffic, not the other way around. Ultimately only you can find the magic answers -- or realize that none exist.

    Best wishes.

And I never say that I want to earn a lot of month through a day or a week. So of course I will work diligently for months and years. • Hello Peter,

First, be wary of anyone telling you "you can't", "you won't", etc. regarding Adsense. Unless they are Adsense experts, you are hearing regurgitated forum 'wisdom'.

I now make the majority of my income with Adsense, and have been doing contextual ad revenue for years.

You certainly could do much better with that site. One suggestion off the top of my head is to put the 'top' (volume wise) countries at the top, perhaps as a separate, large-type 'quick guide' listing. As it it, US, UK, Canada, etc. require sifting through a hard-on-the-eyes listing.

Second, consider including some additional relevant value-add info, which will give you more pages for ads, and allow for more narrowly targeted, higher CPC ads. Think in terms of what someone searching those terms is interested in. Perhaps a section on resume writing, interviewing, relocating, etc.

If you're seeing $.02 clicks, your first priority should be how to add higher CPC sections. Nearly any niche can make a lot of money with Adsense if you're willing to put in the effort intelligently. However, the very first step is to figure out what content within your niche will garner higher value clicks.

      Mark
I have to agree with Mark. Be positive, you can do it. Part of my earnings are from adsense and sponsors. I'm also good at SEO that is why I always have continues traffic. I will admit that my sites don't have huge traffic but I'm still happy with that because I have several domains and I even let my optimization do the work for me. I even don't have link building efforts but honestly with my 30 to 200 visitors can turn into $100 to $500 profit each from adsense and sponsors. It's up to you on how can you manage that. As I told you your site can easily earn at least $300 monthly and even thousands when done correctly but think of multiplication. Even you earn $50 monthly on each sites you produce and you have 100 similar copies then that was $5000 profit a month.

    Hi Peter,

I believe that your site has a lot of potential. However, I think some important changes need to be made for it to realise its true potential.
Here are some changes I would make immediately:
    - Adsense Ads should be on the right hand side of the page - the reason why you should do this is because when visitors scroll down the mouse is on the right hand side of the page. There's a greater chance they will click on your ads or even see your ads.
    - Article Marketing - you should add a resources page where you have articles on how to find top company jobs etc. It must be relevant to the content of the site and must be original. Search engines frown on duplicate content especially duplicate articles. Once you've got an article written, post it on your site, then submit it to Ezinearticle.com, Goarticles.com and Articlemarketer.com
    - Bookmarking would also be great to add on your site
    - Add an opt-in box to your site where visitors can subscribe to your site and receive new job listings from their country of choice. This saves them visiting your site every time for updates. It also means that these visitors stay connected to your site in some way.

I hope these suggestions are helpful. If you need further explanation or assistance, don't hesitate to PM me.

    All the best,

    Martin

Hi, Martin, thank you very much for your suggestions! They are very helpful and useful, I will try them this week.

But I can't full agree with your first suggestion. It is said that adsense should be near people's eye sight instead of near people's mouse. People read my site from left to right, so putting adsense on the left is better than on the right. But I am not sure. Who knows the truth?

About Article Marketing: this suggestion is VERY good! And you also tell me how to do it. Thanks Martin!

About bookmarking: I agree. then people can visit my site again and again. good idea.

The last suggestion is good too. In fact I am planning to add the "job alert" function to my site.

You are very warm-hearted, thank you!

Hi, all, I will keep on updating this thread as I make progress with my website.

        1. My site broke down twice in three days and it is now punished by google. I used to get 200-500visitors from google, now the number drops to 20-50. My site broke down because of the bad network service provided by the ISP. I argued with them. But arguement is useless.

        2. I bought a new server from server4you.com and transmited my site to it. Now the network service should be no problem. And what's more. the speed is good too(my old server is located in China, it is slow when accessed from USA)

        3. I also updated the jobs on my site, now it has 670,000+ jobs. And I also improve the speed of my website.

Next steps: I will improve my site according to the suggestions provided by so many warm-hearted people. including but not limited to:

        1. try more money making methods, for example: clickbank.com and TLA
        2. add a resource section and write articles about jobs, resume writing, interviewing, relocating, etc.then submit it to Ezinearticle.com, Goarticles.com and Articlemarketer.com
        3. make some copies of my sites and make them look unique.
        4. Do more link building and bookmarking work
        5. put the 'top' (volume wise) countries at the top
        6. figure out what content within your niche will garner higher value clicks.
        7. add "job alert" function
        8. replace the 728*90 adsense boxes with one or two 300*250 boxes

Peter, my immediate suggestion is that you could try increasing your Adsense revenue by changing the ads. One thing you could try is to replace the 728*90 adsense boxes with one or two 300*250 boxes. You could also add another adsense at the bottom of the page. It is possible that you could increase your revenue by 50-100% this way.

Another suggestion would be to get more pages indexed. You can try getting inbound links to the inner subdirectories of your site. However, this is potentially risky as it may trigger a manual review by Google. The fact that indeed.com got away with it does not mean that your site will. Therefore, I would also add some value added content to your site.

But it will take at least a few months to get to the $500-1000 mark. You have to decide whether you can wait long. I would keep a very open minded on this if I were you. In the end, it may turn out that this one site is not enough to sustain a full time income. But it does not mean that you cannot do it through other means. For example, you can sell the script or copies of the sites running a script. One person who is pretty successful is Ed Pudol Free scripts, templates, ebooks, and database - turnkey website scripts who is a warrior member.

    Good luck

Hi, it looks a website with good potential. You must promote it much more in order to get tons of traffic, though that´s not easy so I would get a part time job for now.

As a suggestion I would use an extra Adsense module on top of the jobs pages.

Regards and the best of luck

      Hi adpablo,

Thank you! I am doing the promotion. And I am trying my best to make a living on it. If I can't succeed in about half year time, I will go to get a part time job.

      Your suggestion is good .
