Outranking Youtube videos in Google search results?

Was coming up with a new project today while watching football, (IM never leaves my brain apparently) and was was wondering if the process of outranking a Youtube video in Google search is any different than outranking an article @ ezinearticles.com, for example.

Is there something special to this? To outrank an article it's really just a matter of using a similar title, stronger keywords, and stronger backlinks. Would it be any different for Youtube?

I've already found a number of videos appearing in the search results that I want to target but am not quite sure how to approach it. I'm worried that Youtube is a totally different beast when it comes to SEO, and I don't want to waste the next week or so putting this into motion.

Any tips before I dive in?

No different for Youtube in my experience. Do the things you mentioned and build back links and you should outrank them.

You could host your video on AmazonS3 and submit video sitemaps to Google and Bing. The site map will do the trick.

youtube videos seem to have lost their serp strength as compared to half a year ago.

this is based on the ranking of my videos btw.

I definitely agree. But I'm targeting keywords that already have videos appearing in the results. Basically just trying to outrank them. Most have hardly any backlinks and aren't optimized in any way. If the traditional rules apply, I should be able to outrank them pretty easily.

(Market Samurai is a great tool for this, by the way.)

Same rules as outranking anything else I believe. Just takes backlinks, good on-page SEO and some time.
