Using Your Search Phrase As Your Domain Name

When building a site, starting with a solid keyword phrase as your domain can be a good step in the right direction depending on what you do with the site. Keyword phrases that are already getting a lot of organic searches are especially desirable. For example a quick search of what's available for "Chicago" relieved the following short list along with their corresponding monthly searches:

napervillechicago.com 2900
chicagologansquare.com 2900
grandluxcafechicago.com 2900

With 27,000 searches a month for North Ave Chicago, I could presumable build a blog site making sure the search phrase appears in the title, description and sprinkled throughout the content. This should set you up for pretty good rankings in Google. Or perhaps not?

    You could get traffic but you have to consider what you want to achieve. If the searchers are looking for directions, they wont click on your site. If you do get clicks how are you going to monetize it. For instance the CPC in Google Adsense for North Ave Chicago is $0.05, meaning there are practically no advertisers competing for this keyword. If you can find one of these with a way to monitize it, it can be gold

    Ah yes. So presuming we didn't find the phrase as a result of already knowing why it is being highly searched, the challenge is to find out why it is popular (if it's not obvious). So that begs the question, how do we do this? Or should we assume that since the CPC is at the minimum, would it simply be better to look for more obvious winners?

      I think (I could be wrong) that you'll rank really well with the domain as the search term, but generally not where the search term has high (over 2 or 3 thousand a month) searches.

      Certainly at lower levels of monthly searches (around 1000) it seems the domain name is an over-riding factor in Google's algorithm.

    High search volume is irrelevant if it isn't specific to some buying term.

    A general city search term is just people looking for information on the city. Unless you are providing tons of free information on the city, it's unlikely people will stay on your site for more than a few seconds. Even if you found things to monetize it with, people searching on that are not looking to buy anything. And the Anti-Cruelty Society is a non-profit organization for the protection and care of animal. People looking for that are looking to volunteer, donate, or adopt a pet, they aren't looking to buy anything from you. They would be extremely put off if you hijacked a term like that in an attempt to make a few bucks.
