On Page SEO

Another question guys. I got a confusing question. Say for example i am trying to rank for los angeles plumber.
my website is Los Angeles Plumber dottt com

On my main page my all in one SEO plug in would look like this:
Title: Los Angeles Plumber|Serving Los angeles for over 30 years
Description: Los angeles plumber......
Keywords: Los angeles plumber, pipes, sewer, etc

My Question is: on all my subpages should/could I also be including Los Angeles Plumber in every description?????????????Since it is the main keyword. Also would I get penalized if my main keyword is in the description of all 20 pages on my site? Example here would be a subpage with pipe cleaning as keyword:

Title: Pipe Cleaning|Los Angeles Plumber
Description: Los Angeles Plumber John Smith Talks about pipe cleaning
keywords: Los angeles Plumber, pipe cleaning,

Could I just be filling in the description of every page as Los Angeles Plumber John Smith and then talk about the individual post? Can I get penalized for this? Hope this makes sense to everyone!

  • Hi

Your description tag needs to be different on each page, just like each page's content is different. The description tag needs to describe exactly what is on that page.

Sure, you can have the keyword "los angeles plumber" in your home page description, and other pages as well, but you dont want to over do it. Be precise on each page.
  • Ok maybe I will just keep the main keyword in the description of the homepage only. Than you. For some reason my thanks button isn't appearing!
  • Google ranks pages, not sites. Google apparently doesn't use the description in its algorithm (though others might) so use it as a call to action for your page. People will read your description before clicking through to the site so make each description count.

Your site name should be naturally mentioned someone on each page just for useability.

Your other pages should be used to attract traffic for secondary keywords. Put the same focus on them as your home page - just for different keywords.

    • I never understood why people take his word as gospel.

The dude heads the spam department.

Do you honestly think he'd be telling you what G algo does and does not incorporate?
  • Yeah, it is much better to believe a random blogger with no inner-knowledge of Google who creates an experiment that breaks all scientific process...and presents the results any way they can to prove their original assumption.

If people think stuffing their description and keyword meta with keywords is worthwhile then go for it.

You are right though, Matt Cutts does work for the Google spam team and he doesn't want the results filled up with rubbish. IF only they had some skilled engineers working for them to implement his spin...

    • I'll take anyone's opinion, with any bit of evidence correlated to the subject, over Matt's.

But hey, if you believe taking his advice is what's best for your websites then I'm curious how you acted when you found out Santa Claus was fake as well as the Easter Bunny

  • Each page on your site should be focused on and targeting a different keyword phrase. Therefore, each page's title, description, and keywords should be different from all other pages on the site.

And just as an FYI... If you want your home page to rank for "Los Angeles Plumber" then "Los Angeles Plumber|Serving Los angeles for over 30 years" is a bad title. You're better off just using "Los Angeles Plumber" (the phrase you want to rank for). Those other words only serve to reduce the keyword density of Los Angeles Plumber within the title element making it harder for that page to rank for its targeted keyword phrase.

While keyword density at the page level is not all that important, keyword density within important HTML elements that are themselves individual ranking factors (like <title>, <h1>, <h2>s, anchor text, etc.) is VERY important. Keyword.

For example, if I want a page to rank for "apple" then <title>apple</title> has a keyword density of 100% for apple. If I have a title like "Apple: An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away" has a keyword density of about 22%... HUGE difference.

    • Thanks, I was just having questions regarding how to re-write the page titles on my website..
  • Thanks you.

  • You should optimize each page differently for each keyword you are targeting. I wouldn't heavily optimize each subpage for Los Angeles Plumber if they are not each targeting that phrase.

That said, your homepage may receive some more juice for this phrase if you do your interlinking correctly and the subpages are also ranking this term.
