If you're a member of a private message forum with a high page rank and you post a message on the forum with a link back to your site in your sig, will that count as a backlink? It's a PR 5 site, so does it count as a PR 5 link?

Thanks for the help,

Zach

    Zach:

Your link will count as a backlink, but it won't be a PR5 backlink.

Having backlinks from high PR websites is always a good idea. Especially when they are coming from a site that is on the same topic as the website your linking to.

Firstly, Search engines give weithage to each page based on different factors. Generally if you have a back-link from a highly ranked page then you will have the benefit of getting some value from that highly ranked page which has a link to your site.

Coming to having a link on forum signature is entirely different thing from a regular website page, this is because search engines value these links differently from that of a normal webpage link. The main reason for this is growing spam.

Let's view it from different angle, apart from search engine benefits having a back-link on forum signature will help you in different ways. The more you participate in the forum the more people see you around and the chance of clicking/visit your site via that signature link is high.

Your backlink will count only if it's dofollow. You can use a Firefox plugin like Quirk to easily verify if backlinks on forums, blogs, sites... are dofollow.

If the page where your forum- or blog post appears is on a PR5 page (which will be rarely the case), then you also get the link juice of a PR5 link.

The other important element is also the number of links that are already on this page. If you get a link from a PR5 page where there are already 1000 backlinks, then this kind of link will be pretty worthless.

Also, forum- and blog comment backlinks are regarded as low impact links and they won't improve your rankings a lot - except if you try to rank for very exotic long tail keywords with very low competition.

Before posting a comment to an specific forums be sure that it is an do follow to make it count as backlink. If you're having a hard time to know if the site is a no follow or do follow use plug ins or tools from firefox in google.
