Importance of Anchor Text in Backlinks

Hi all,

I was just analyzing some of my competitions backlinks, and notice that he had quite a few. When I checked the links a little more, I noticed that quite a bit of the time he did not use his keywords in the anchor text for the backlink. Sometime he'd use the first two words of the keyword, otherwise it would sometimes be something unrelated.

Does the anchor text make a big difference in terms of ranking? Or does it simply matter how many links are pointing to your site/page?

Thanks!

The anchor text is a very important part of your ranking. Basically the anchor text works as a vote for your site to rank for a certain keyword ( your anchor text).

you can not always get an anchor text link and it would be very good to have different anchor texts since this would look more natural to google. However you need to focus on your main keyword in order to rank for it. Just add a few links with different anchors to make it look more natural.

Here are some simple steps on how to insert a link into your comment. Just copy the code below and change the link location and link name in the given html code with your own data. That's it!

    <a href="link location">link name</a>

Having keywords in the anchor text is very important, but that doesn't mean every link needs to have your target keywords in them or that the only words in the anchor text should be target keywords. A link with the anchor text "New York Real Estate Investor" could help the target website rank for any combination of those keywords, such as "New York Investor", "Real Estate Investor", "New York Real Estate", etc.

      Thanks everyone,

It looks like my competitor has set up his blog so that each time he writes a particular two word phrase, a link is set up to go to his three word phrase optimized page. In other words, each time "green widget" is written in his blog, a link is automatically inserted to "buy green widget". As you can tell, the anchor text is not the same thing he is optimizing for on his money page, but he is getting the links.

Do these links still help when optimizing for the page in question?

      Thanks!
