How long does Google take to index?

I recently put up a site, and was just wondering how long it takes Google to index a new site.

I have heard tow weeks, does that sound right?

I bought Market Samari, and I noticed in the rank checker that some of those sites had not been indexed in a long time.

Anyhow, thanks in advance for the input.

This is the million dollar question! It all depends. Could be seconds, minutes, hours, days. Just start some SEO on it, build some backlinks and it should happen fairly quickly.

Start building backlinks. Google needs at least one backlink to find your site. You won't be indexed at all if you have no backlinks and the more backlinks you have the better chance you have of getting indexed quickly.

If you simultaneously submit your site to Google and add it to Google Maps/Places and submit a sitemap, it will be indexed faster than if you simply use the submit function.

It all depends if you leave it alone or not. If you link to it from another site with high pagerank it can be done in a few hours. If nothing else just link to it from Twitter or Facebook or Youtube and it should get picked up pretty quick.

    James,
I have had great success using the methods below. Typically my sites are indexed within a few hours, 24 hours tops in most cases.

    Do this..

    1. Go to Is My Site Indexed? - and enter in your URL. Once submitted, view all of the pages listed at the very bottom by clicking on them. You will see the links at the bottom of the page. You dont need to do anything here, just open each in a new window.

    2. Submit your URL to DIGG and REDDIT. Oh, and TWITTER

    3. Submit your site to the 3 major search engines.

    URL Submission - Bing
    Site Explorer - Submit
    Add your URL to Google

    4. Ping your URL

Blog and Ping Tool - Use Pingler.com to Drive Traffic your Blogs and Websites
    Blog and ping | Pingoat

    5. Grab a cup of coffee, or in my case, tea (Very important)

PS Id like to thank the people in THIS THREAD for their advice on this very topic too!

The quickest way I know to get your site indexed is to just do a Press Release to a couple of the PR sites that allow free PR submissions.

There are probably other ways to, but Google LOVES the news!

The first site that I ever made was indexed in about an hour. Submitting my content to social bookmarking sites was the key in my case. I think the longest it ever took for me was a day, so I'm pretty sure that if you submit your content to sites like Digg, Reddit, ect. you should be indexed in no time.

Also submit a sitemap via webmaster tools.

This will also give you info on how well indexed you are.

Create about 50 backlinks, grab the URL's convert them to an rss feed, submit to rss directories, then bookmark em...site normally gets indexed in an hour or 2..

My site is indexed, it was listed before I put a mini site up for it, but google hasn't updated the meta name description yet. How long does that take? They have indexed my other pages with the meta name description, just not the main home page. I also can't stand how google and yahoo/bing keep jumping my ranking around. Some days I'm on page one for my main keyword, other days I'm on page two. Annoying.

AS mentioned before if you just leave your site, nothing will EVER happen..

I see many people mentioning to submit it to the search engines and add it to google webmaster tools etc...im not saying this does not work...im sure it does..but i have NEVER used these methods..

Quickest way that has worked for me is to run a social bookmarking campaign on my new site. Include Digg, Stumble Upon, Propeller and Mister Wong..
also if you have a level 2 account on Yahoo Answers write a question, or answer a question on there leaving a link to your site...these pages are indexed every few minutes

For some reason, it's really hard for me to get my sites listed in Bing even though I do pingler, pingoat and all of the social bookmarks.

I have to physically submit it to Bing through their submit link.

Not sure if this applies or not, But i set up a site with go-daddy and almost 1000 back links later the site had not been indexed, in there service they submit the site map to Google/ linked to web master tools. I found i had to change a setting at go daddy in the site configuration then at webmaster tools. but was indexed directly afterward. Had something to do with using www or not.

Wow, some great info in this thread and some truly horrible information.

For the last two years I have never failed to have a new blog indexed in less than 24 hours.

I social bookmark it using Digg, Stumbleupon, Reddit, and a handful of others.

    I submit my RSS Feed.

I create 1 video with a link in the description on YouTube pointing to my blog.

    I wait.

This gets it indexed, but not ranked. Ranking takes more time, more backlinks, more content.

Some blogs with the right plug-ins which ping your content may be indexed faster than you even get any useful content on them. I have often found a blog I have just setup, I'm still tweaking the theme, already indexed before I'm really ready.

You are wasting a heluva lot of time if you're doing this to get indexed. I submit to google sitemaps and hit pingler - 2 minutes tops. I'm almost always indexed the next day. You seriously create a video to get indexed?? Or is that to start the backlinking process.. which I could understand.

There's really no magic formula in getting your site indexed quickly. It seems that some websites just manage to get indexed more quickly than others. I'd suggest submitting a press release and also submit an article to Ezine Articles. Never underestimate these. PR's are powerful and Ezine has lots of link juice to take advantage of. Then I'd do some social bookmarking and submit my RSS feed. The key is to build high quality backlinks - quality over quantity.

The information from Buyseech is good, however I'd add to that creating a sitemap and submitting that to Google Webmaster tools. I've found that submitting the sitemap helps my site get indexed relatively fast.

The last site I put up got indexed within 12 hours, however I've had a few that take a few days to get indexed. I'm not sure what the dependent factors are!
