maybe I don't get thi social bookmarking... what's the point? I upload my bookmarks, and SO? I submit my blog/site, but that doesn't mean much unless I get a single link from having it in my profile with the site as well?
Can someone give me a quick explanation of what good these are and how to use it effectively?

Well Jon, I can't speak for anyone else, because my technique seems to be a little different, but I'll tell you what I do.

I create interesting content. Something people want to see, something funny, something controversial, whatever.

I submit it to social networks and let it gain in popularity.

Example: Here's a simple image of oily water that I captioned and uploaded with the British Petroleum logo by its side.

I added it to the Stumbleupon network. It got 15,000 hits in 6 days- BECAUSE IT'S FUNNY.
It's slowed down now, it has 60,000 hits

From Stumbleupon alone.

If you work other Social networks, like Digg right, you can get hits into the millions, it's a little trickier there though, because your content really has to be amazing.

I think most people here just blindly submit their stuff to a bunch of networks for the links it gives them..

I usually use a website called knowem.com.
They have a complete list of all the web 2.0 sites, but I think it is helpful for you to have sorted them out in this manner.
