I see many people asking in forums if blog commenting really works or not. I tested blog commenting on my recent site and want to share some info with you guys.

I built a site related to food product review and posted around 50 blog comments on various blogs.

The site was at 4th page before blog commenting was done. I just checked today and VOILA! the ranking has improved.

Now my site is on 2nd page. Yeah, i know its nothing great but at least major improvement is there.

Now i will quickly go and write some articles and hope that it gets on first page!

PS: i only did blog commenting for this site and no other SEO activity.

it was both dofollow and nofollow... i hired one guy who commented on the posts..

Although i used a different technique. I always posted comments on new posts and not older ones. I guess many guys make a mistake of posting on old posts. It is always wise to post a comment on a fresh post..

there are ways to find latest posts... Like RSS etc

A link is a link but you need to consider the rel, pr of page and site, trust factor and other things. Not all links are equal and you need to spend your time doing things that will give you the best results. Every online marketer needs to get these facts down if they really want to be successful.

Thats the key because the really good sites to get links on are the sites that are moderated (cutting down on the number of links on the page). Post garbage and it never gets published.

I have always wondered about blog back links because it is difficult to get the anchor text you want and there are usually quite a lot of other links on the page from other commenters.

Yeah, I agree that a link is a link too, as long as it's dofollow. I've posted on a lot of nofollow blogs and I feel as though I never get the link juice. I mean, it makes sense since the nofollow tag isn't supposed to pass any juice anyway.

A lot of blogs nowadays are converting the links in their comments from dofollow links to nofollow links, meaning that they're not gonna pass much if any juice to the site it links to. And a lot of people speculate that all blog platforms will soon use those nofollow links on blog comments to help eliminate spam, meaning that all those links that people once posted on the dofollow blogs will now be nofollow links and won't count for rankings in the SERPs. So all their sites that they linked to from dofollow blogs will fall out of the SERPs. That's one of the reasons why a good diverse link portfolio (lots of different types of links from lots of different places) is a good thing, so if/when stuff like this happens, you're site won't just fall into oblivion. I personally don't think all blogging platforms will convert their comments to nofollow, though...I think it'll just be an option for the blog's webmaster to decide on.

    That's exactly right, @Chris Sweeney.

Also, to combat spam, a number of sites are making their links redirect links based on their own domain which simultaeously helps their own ranking.

Also, when allowing comments, remember the labor factor required because comments must be monitored for a number of reasons.

As your website becomes more popular and the comments steadily increase, more labor is required as some comments and links can negatively affect SEO and your liability. Therefore, create a plan for both short term and long term.

Well for SEO it would work, why not? From a moral thing, I would always believe that if you are commenting on a blog, making a sensible and interesting comment that has real value should be the way to go. If you are lookingto be helped by getting a link back, at least do help them (who are helping you) by adding value.

How many comments did you make to what sort (PR etc) of blogs?

I read recently that if you are going to promote a site via blog comment links, Google will flag you if you only post on do follow blogs because the posting profile doesn't look organinc. In other words, even though it seems like a waste of time to comment on nofollow blogs, it really isn't, because it will help your link profile look more natural. Has anyone else heard this, or is it just me?

Just my two cents: I have heard that stated, and it's totally false (nothing against you of course ). If that was true, I could just post a ton of comments on dofollow blogs with the links pointing at my competitors' sites and Google will flag all of their sites, and I will take over the top spot super fast. That sort of "link sabotage" can't happen because it would make it so much easier for people to rank, and everyone would just be sabotaging their competitors to take over top spots. Therefore, inbound links can't hurt you.

I do agree with you though that you should have a diverse link profile, for reasons mentioned in my post above.

However long it takes to get to the top of the SERPs for your keyword . It really all depends on the keyword you're trying to rank for, your competition, how many backlinks you already have, the quality of those backlinks, etc.

That's great man. People really do overlook commenting and what it can do for you.

Not only does help seo with links but also when people come to the site and see a lot of activity they are automatically drawn to the buzz.

You could write quite few post on the power of commenting. I wish you more success and I hope you are using comment luv.

It gives back a little to the people commenting on your post.

if you want to increase your PR then post in dofollow blog. I believe blog comment on a dofollow blog do help, when the blog is related to your site. for traffic and marketing purpose, you can post in nofollow blog. if you want it to look natural to google you have to post to both dofollow and nofollow blogs.

If you do blog commenting in related and quality websites/ blogs, it can help you. But you should only comment of quality blogs. Because having backlinks from low quality blogs can hurt your ranking. And as i searched the number of quality blogs is a few. And its very difficult to find them. And the other problem is most of these blogs are nofollow. However i know nofollow backlinks can help too, but as we know dofollow ones are better.

Yeah I am trying blog commenting for the first time this year and have seen good results.

Most my traffic comes from article marketing which I also use for SEO (or get that as an additional benefit).

However recently I have even tested commenting and pointing the link at certain articles and seen their position on the search engines improve.

Am still working out a clear blog commenting strategy for my business.

I agree that mixing up backlinks is a good idea and blog/forum posting is a great additional link method to have in your toolbox. I do think time is too valuable to spend time on too many no follow comments. I saw the plug-in earlier for Firefox that identifies follow/nofollow and downloaded it. Does anyone have another plugin they reccomend that simply shows Pagerank so your making sure its a quality link also?

I agree. A link is a link. Some links help more than others. The only type of link I probably would not get for SEO value are from "links" pages and reciprocal links (years ago msn dropped one of my sites and specifically said it was because of reciprocal linking). The worst that can happen is that Google devalues a certain type of link and you lose rankings. If you're found violating a Google TOS, then Google can ban your site as well.

Yes it does work provided you comment on relevant niche topics and vary your linking. As far as i know dont link all your comments back to your index page. Also, contribute to blog forums also and dont spam. I beleive all the hype programs via affiliate marketing are all BS and just to make the sellers fast cash with no value products.

The Google robot seem not to distinguish between the original post and the follow up text.

I have certainly found commenting on high PR blogs has had a considerable effect on my own PRs.

It seems to be like blog commenting is a part of a properly diversified SEO campaign but do you guys know any way to outsource it? If yes how do you go about it and monitor your outsourcer?

Has anyone heard about amazon turk where you can outsource one small project to hundreds different people. I might try this one for blog commenting.

Like others have said before a link is a link. I personally believe that all backlinks blog comments/social bookmarketing/directories/profile links/article marketing even natural links are in the same category.

The things that are important are things like PR and number of links on the site.
