With so many people online that speak Chinese as their primary language, does it make sense to get into that market?

    • Me too, but I am getting some help. However, I don't know much about Baidu yet. Is there a good forum that covers it?
  • If Google's just popular on China then things wouldn't be that hard. I've heard that Chinese weren't bothered if Google will evaporate from the Internet but they outraged when World of Warcraft servers were shut down. China is a booming gaming industry. According to them, they are not bothered by the lost of Google since it's only one of the search engines and they have Baidu, a search engine mainly for the Chinese netizens.

But if you would still prefer to target audiences in China, you must first study the ins and outs of Baidu. here's an article regarding that matter. http://www.filination.com/blog/2007/...-seo-in-china/

    • Just wan to quote this. Thanks for the share. I haven't heard so far people optimizing their sites for foreign countries. Baidu SEO is worth the try though but I guess good conversions should not be expected. China is an industry of its own and is one of the world's powerhouse. They won't be as enthusiastic on foreign products.
  • Very interesting, Chinese people want to enter the English station,Foreigners to think of China's market。
  • It will work for chinese search engines linke baidu and other chinese serch engine
  • Huge potential, but seriously I don't know how to do kw research without data from google. Have to do some research in Baidu I guess, or a Chinese version of MS.
  • but how can we do SEO on Chinese sites. how can we search keywords and how on page and off page work will be done. still mystery for me
  • In the coming years, China has the most Internet users, and most of them are not good at English. There are several potential sources of visitor traffic that you can benefit, including search engines, social networking sites, or other rules for the SEO referrals. The Chinese Internet market is a little different than any other country.
  • Every search engine are primarily the same, the motto is to provide the best possible results and the sites that are reputed or the pages that matches the most would be shown on the results.Focus your attention on these.
  • Yes, I am sure you will be successful with the Chinese people. Just make a try.
  • The Chinese market is radically different to Western world.

First of all most Chinese use the internet for entertainment, rather than business.

Second, most Chinese don't have much cash, so they don't buy stuff if they can get it for free.

Third the Chinese have their own versions of facebook, google and just about everything else. QQ is immensely popular, and QQ Farm is their equivalent of FarmVille.

Chinese people do buy stuff online - I remember my Chinese friend ordering cosmetics online.

The cultural differences are immense though so you'll have an uphill struggle without local help. I went to Wuhan last year and it was the strangest place I've ever visited. Chinese culture is very mysterious (but a lot of fun).
  • I am a China-based Internet Marketing Consultant. If any of your guys need help, just PM me.
If you have any of the following advantages, i'd suggest you have a try:
    A. a well-established website.
    B. Good product.
    C. Good service.
We have more than 300 million netizens and market is as big as you can image. China is world's second largest market in terms of luxury goods.
  • China has its own versions at all regarding SEO but the concept is still the same and I'm thinking of it that there is a possibility to happen but its still a question for me.
  • Another barrier for Chinese SEO work is that you need to register a Baidu 'adwords' account for a website and put a deposit down BEFORE you can use their keyword tool.

You can use the Google.com.hk chinese keyword tool, and as Google represents about 20+% of market it should help get started.

Here is a good Chinese IM site.
  • I'm off to a decent start. I have a new Chinese section. I am thinking about getting some web hosting in Hong Kong. Not sure if that will help. Does the host location matter?

    • I think it does matter. Hong kong is taken as a "foreign" region in many ways. For most Chinese visitors, connection speed to a Hong kong-hosted site is as slow as one hosted in other foreign countries.

And just an advise, your Chinese section is too much translated from a English version, it's perfect grammatically but can be better as a sales page. I am a native Chinese by the way.

  • there is no doubt that the Chinese market is big and profitable. Most people are only focused on the saturated English market. If you focus on the chinese market, you can easily dominate niches that are not very difficult in the English market. Create a chinese site and submit your site to Baidu.com. Focus on the Chinese local search engines and you will see a lot of traffic to your site.

    • Have you done this yourself? How do you determine which keywords are easy targets?
  • It would be great, Google have tried and are still trying to get into the Chinese market, if only the language was easy...
