Google Rank: Sub-Domain vs Domain ?

So is there really any difference between a sub domain and a domain when it comes to ranking in google?

Let's say I could buy quitsmokingnow.com that matches my keyword phrase exactly or I can use an existing domain like productreviewblog.com? Then I can make a sub domain such as quitsmokingnow.productreviewblog.com. (these are purely examples)

Will it be easier to rank the domain with the keyword match or will it be about the same using the sub-domain? I am curious if this can be a cost saving move if you are wanting to build multiple sites. If I would have to work harder building backlinks with sub domains then I think it would just be worth it to stick to a regular domain keyword match.

Thanks,
Jay Vance

I think it is about the same. Using subdomains can be helpful if you already have the #1 spot, and you want to dominate the keyword. For example, notice how Facebook has about 6 out of 10 on the first page using subdomains.

I have my blog on a subdomain of my main site and Google seems to like it better than my main site.
