Alexa rank question

Hey all

So, I know Alexa is not something I should really use a meter for traffic, but it doesn't really matter to my client who understands this however his advertisers opinions do. His prospective clients do in fact rely on Alexa's rating. Just a fact he has to deal with.

Anyway, his Alexa rank was steadily improving amongst other factors I've been tracking for him during this last year. The last 3 weeks, though, his ranking has moved from 220k to 330k.. ! Even 20k each of the last 2 days... His traffic during the last summer months has decreased yes, but not that significantly.

So, I ask the many genius SEO warriors on this forum for any solid advice I can use to get his rank back up. I've already been advised by an experienced SEO warrior to get some press releases out and I will do that this weekend. Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks!!

  • Look at for keywords that you are ranking for and see if you could easily move them up a few slots. Ie from #3 to #2 to help increase traffic.
  • Just install the Alexa toolbar and visit the site several times a day. Get someone else to do it as well. Should be able to get it under 200 000 really easy by doing that ... kinda makes a mockery of the ALexa rankings that they are so easy to manipulate.

Press releases won't help -- you need visits from people with the the Alexa toolbar installed to influence the Alexa ranking. Get your client to get a few freinds to install it as well and visit his site.

What has that got to do with the Alexa ranking?
  • No doubt Alexa is quirky.

On my site, i'm at ~3000 in the US, but i've had a few days that showed up as ~25k, and my traffic was actually slightly higher during those days.

What niche is your client in? One thing to keep in mind, is that general traffic doesn't cut it. You have to have people visit who have either the Alexa toolbar installed, or a couple of other plugins that use and transmit Alexa data. So, you are basically talking about webmasters and IMers. That is why IM/webmaster type sites give unrealistically get unrealistically high rankings in Alexa.

If it was me, I would see if you could add some content to the site that that could potentially target the webmaster or internet marketing crowd, and publicize/link to it. Getting another 65yo grandma to visit your knitting site isn't going to help your Alexa rating i'm afraid.

    • Hi Guys

I really appreciate your input! The site is for emini day traders and a fairly competitive market though nowhere near the forex numbers.

I have the alexa toolbar installed on my computer and his small staff has that installed as well. It would be great if his list of subscribers would install it too, but getting them to do that, or rather asking them to do that might come off like a desperado move and I am sure he won't go for it. Not that any of you suggested this tactic... it just occurred to me that it would be a great boost.

The idea of getting IMers to visit the site is pretty good too, but I don't see how else to do that but to create a page (not accessible from the site's main navigation) that is IM keyword rich. He does have an affiliate program, but it's really for people who have traded before ...

It is good to know that a press release wouldn't really do the trick, that way I can focus on something else to make this work. I my opinion, Alexa is for the birds!
    • This is a great idea ..

  • Just out of interest, in what way do his prospective clients rely on Alexa ranking?

    • That's a very good question. He has had numerous people who are in the day trading business show interest in purchasing his site and they have often mentioned Alexa rank. These are not 'clients' perse, but perhaps interested buyers. I would imagine as a potential buyer you would know better. This is something though I will need to clarify further with him: "Who are these 'prospective clients' exactly?"

Literally, though, in the last 3 days I think I've seen the rank go from 308K to just now 358K.. to me that's just odd, dont' you think?... or maybe not since Tom Goodwin's went up from 3k to 25k .. that's a huge jump too.

By the way, to clarify, I oversee the basic web code and design projects of the site and anything SEO/PPC related I've been asked to do has had me on my toes, learning from the Warrior Forum. Educating myself here constantly. So I am an SEOer in training!
