Not as easy to rank in the SERPs?

Hi all, One of my main sites that I created last April had no issues ranking on the first page within a couple of weeks. I didn't have many backlinks (mostly linking between my own sites). I created a new site a month ago in a very uncompetitive niche and have still found my posts to be no where near PAge 1. In fact only one is ranked in the first 20 pages (Page 17). Is it harder and harder to rank higher in the SERPs nowadays? Just wondering if anyone else experienced this lately. Thanks!

  • not all keywords are created equal. There honestly could be better competition in that other niche. I would focus on content and some quality links and hopefully rankings will improve.

Ranking on the first page of G in 2 weeks could have been from a super low amount of competition and maybe they didn't throw you into any kind of sandbox due to this reason.

Your site has only been up for a month, you might be in a sandbox, etc. Like I said, just keep working on it and give it some time.

    • It's not easy to rank for real world searches done by real people for real
keywords. That's the thing that trips everyone up. This thread can rank for
any sentence here. But who's searching?

If you want to know what real people are searching for, in most cases, pick
any keyword for your site and type it into google instant. The suggestions
are what people usually search for, and the variations.

This negates the craziness by people screaming, hey I rank #1 for x, y, z!
Not realizing, that people are just not searching for that. Course it fills
the forum up with, hey I rank #1 but I get no traffic! Yeah. No kidding.

If it's harder and harder to rank in the top searches, then what are the people
      who are above you saying?

Reminds of what Yogi Berra once said,
"Nobody goes there anymore because it's too crowded."

Your site does not exist in a vacuum. Your competition is working
harder than you. Just when you think you have done enough, you
      have only done 50%.

  • Certainly, ranking these days is more difficult than hitherto. You require more on-page seo and backlinks than before.
