There's plenty of free keyword tools you can use for your research.

Check out this article I wrote recently on the subject...

    Hope this helps!

I don't know if this is the best, but the one one tool I consider one of the best is Keyword spy, combined with google keyword tool

This combination gives me not only which keywords have the most searches but also which ones are converting the best

    Hey,

It's best if you know what exactly do you need the tool for before purchasing it.

    PPC or SEO?

KeywordSpy, Spyfu etc is good for researching PPC keywords, but for SEO you're going to need something that'll be able to analyze two important things.

    1. Search volume.
    2. Competition level to rank the keyword in Google.

The other bonuses that you might be interested in:
    1. Profitability, these are things such as Avg. CPC per keyword, advertiser's competition level.
    2. Search trends, seasonal or non seasonal.

Hope it works out for you.

There is a problem with your question.

The best way to do keyword research starts with
what are you trying to do?

So you want to know, "what's the best way to do keyword
    research for ____________? "

If I were setting up a site to sell a product
my keyword research would be different than if
I were setting up a site for a local dentist.

    Hey Visimedia,

Since it seems your new to keyword research, I highly recommend you start with Google's Free Keyword Tool which comes in two forms: Google Adwords Keyword Tool and Google's Search Based Keyword Tool.

For me I use and prefer the "Google Adwords Keyword Tool" since it's more easier to use, understand, and gives me the results I'm looking for.

My advice is to learn from a mentor or an expert in the area of Keyword Research. This is the exact way that I first learned Keyword Research when I first started, because I was lost, confused, and had no idea what the heck I was doing.

But, I found a mentor who I respected and heard a lot about and just followed what he taught me (oh and this was all free). Doing this dramatically shortened my learning curve and allowed me to become very good, very quickly at Keyword Research.

There are a number of experts/mentors in this area. If you want the name of the expert I learned from just send me a PM.

    Good luck,

    Sonam

Agreed with above, if you're looking for the "best" way to do kw research, you need to specify what you're doing. PPC? Niche? SEO?

Personally, I like MicroNiche Finder, it's helped me a lot. But I use it in different ways, depending on what I'm working on.

I tried spyfu, keywordspy, but they are more concentrated on adwords keywords, in my mind. Found SerpAnalytics service, it shows well both organic and adwords keywords and positions.

I've tried that is the past and found it no real benefit. I was also over-charged at one point as well, albeit by mistake.

The real tool is between your ears.

I'd PM Sonam above this post and get the name of an expert mentor.

      Good luck and have fun!
