I'd really value some advice as someone looking to take the plunge.

I've been doing some keyword research in a hungry niche but where the keyword searches aren't massive. I've found one that I think is a useful keyword and took a look at some competing sites.

The number one site for my keyword (not in quotes) has over 800 back links according to Yahoo's back link checker. If I remove the links from that domain it drops to just over 400. When you check those 400 out many of them are from a blog suggesting and appears to be a link in the side bar.

When you key the keyword into google the top result is a top level domain and not a page within it.

As an additional step I keyed the domain into a PR checker, which suggests it is PR0.

Am I missing something or is this worth chasing?

Thanks

Andrew

How does their on-page SEO look? Sitemap and robots.txt all neatly in order? Is the domain aged at all? Look at the next few results, and if they look harder to take down then that top listing is either doing something very right or using blackhat SEO. Also note that when you get multiple links from a single website, the links get devalued so that someone can't use a top commentator widget to get 2500 high PR links just by making a few comments. If it looks like something you think you can take down, go for it.

I'm obviously being a real dumbass here. How would I do some of the things you've described?

      Thanks
