Can someone tell me what this is?

There is a site that is apparently some kind of "portal" that is ranking for one of my niche keywords. I don't understand what this site is...there doesn't appear to be any new information on it since 2006, and no one even posted on the forum back in that year. Why is it ranking, then?

I'm wondering if it would be worth it to revive the forum so I can promote my blog in my signature, or buy the domain, or something.

Anyone? I really want to know what's going on with this site, and I don't have even the vocabulary to research it myself.

Hard to tell without seeing the exact page that is ranking. My bet is that the age of the site, PR and possibly a few good links. It can be hard to beat a well established site, even if it is inactive. 2003 is like ancient history. Do you have a exact match domain for the term you are after?

www.helpdesking.com, for help desk and help desk management. It also comes up when you search forums on Google, and the forum hasn't been active...well...ever.

After looking at it more, they have some strong links, old links and a natural link profile. Combine that with it's age and it will be hard to de-trench them. I've seen this before in Google, where dormant sites rank well just due to the age of the site and age of it's links.

You'll just have to work harder to beat them unfortunately. Since it's inactive, you could reach out to them.

I have a website like this lol. It's a B2B portal and I've been revamping it lately, but it sat dormant for years and dominated rankings due to the mass quality inbound links, domain age and residual traffic.

Helpdesking.com doesn't seem have too many backlinks (I found 150 inbound) but they do have a few from strong sources.

The primary reason is that they have an aged domain that had stood the test of time, in Google's opinion. It's 7.5 years old and registered for another 5.5 years. Google likes to hear stuff like this.

The Alexa rank is really high @ 2,939,320 that's in the top 9.45% of the Internet - you've got tough competition!!

I wasn't thinking of it as competition. I was thinking of revving up that forum for my own usage (something I'm very good at), but I wanted to reach out to them first. I wouldn't want to do something like that only to have them call me a spammer and get rid of me, or something else that would make it a waste of time. The content I could put on there and the conversation I could stimulate would be awesome, and it could get me noticed by all the people who are clicking through to this empty site on a daily basis. I could even buy the domain eventually.

Even if something eventually did happen that was bad, I still would have gotten alot out of it first.

      Thoughts? Encouragement? Discouragement? LOL

      Nice find!

While each one does take you to the English page, it's only the central frame that's English.

The right bar and left bar are translated into the language of choice giving the illusion that the site is in the selected language. All the content is in the central frame though- and it's in English. Google doesn't realize this.

Neat little inadvertent SEO trick they pulled there.

Woo hoo! I just clicked the thanks button on everyone who helped me with this. Helpdesking.com was a huge mystery for me until about 10 minutes ago, and now I'm enlightened.
