How Do You Create "Brand Links" ??

I read over some of the recent stuff about this topic and was wondering what the heck people mean about earning "Brand" links. This is especially problematic when I try imagine how that would work unless it all went to the home page.

If I had a site hxxp://CarReviewer.com then I can see people linking to the home page with a brand link via something like this:
...the word on the street is that the new Corvette ZR1 will have NOS ports installed at the factory. In fact, John Benson over at Car Reviewer told us that, when looking under the hood...

This type of thing makes sense if the link points to the Car Reviewer home page...but how would that occur on sub pages?

...and not only are these new diesel cars being imported in greater numbers, but after reading articles such as Car Reviewer's Hyundai Genesis Diesel Review we can see that these companies are not dropping the ball on this one...

If the above link was pointed at that particular article, does it serve as a "Brand Link?" Or are the experts saying that sub pages should be linked like this...
...it is interesting to note that not everyone loves the new Ford F-150. Experts such as Car Reviewer have denounced the new design as less tough and more fluff...

Obviously, the above link would seem to be a "Brand Link" but if it pointed not to the home page, but to the actual negative Ford F-150 review on the site, it would seem to be doing more harm than good in that it would be telling the search engines that the Ford F-150 review page should be associated with the term "Car Reviewer" instead of what the site owner would really want it to rank for which I assume would be the term "Ford F-150 Review".

Any insight on this would be appreciated.
