How to change Wordpress "post" to a "page"?

Im running a wordpress.org system and recently started using "pages" instead of "posts" mostly so I can control what's on the front page.
So my question is how do I convert my previously created "posts" to static "pages"? I don't want to lose backlinks I've already built to it, so it needs to have the same URL. FYI I'm using "/%postname%" for permalinks
I have tried just deleting the posts, and creating a page in its place with the exact same name, but the page won't load in the browser.. it gets some error like the page does not exist (even after deleting the post). So there's probably some issue with duplicate post/page names in the wordpress database. I've searched wordpress.org forums for this and similar issues show, but they are because of different problems (themes).
This is not something I'm familiar with. Does anyone have any idea how to do this?
