High Paying Adsense Keywords - Checking for competition?

Hello World. I have been reading up on high paying Adsense keywords, and it seems that people have been finding them. However, while the ridiculous CPCs are great, no one mentions how to check for competition for them. I mean, how can you make money without traffic? So my question is this: How do you cash in with these? I'm willing to bet that the competition is super high because of the super high CPCs, so do you:

1. Use your favorite SEO competition tool (Market Samurai, Traffic Travis, SEO Elite) and relentlessly research the high CPC keywords until you find a golden one, grab an EMD if possible then cash in that way after minimal backlinking?

2. Or do you simply go after them blind and build a ridiculous amount of backlinks until you hit the first page (which could take months)?

3. Or is there another way?

Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Samurai does the trick for me. When used properly it will tell you everything you want to know about your competition and how to beat them.

    I also like Samurai although I don't necessarily go for the known high paying keywords. I'll come up with terms on my own and use google to determine the competition level myself. This helps stay ahead of people giving out "keyword lists" and what not.

        You need to target the long tail derivatives of this high paying keywords, Google will still display ads on your sites that is relevant to the high paying keywords. I hope this clarify things a bit.
