Just a bit of advice, I'm sure a lot of people already know but completely ignore their competition bar, it's completely wrong nearly all the time.

  Agreed. I rarely rely on the competition bar, just use the search counts and use other tools for competition.

I've found hundreds of keywords that show up as high competition but when you look at the top 10, all the results are sub-domains, with no PR and under 25 backlinks.

It pays to check, seriously.

The competition bar shows the competition the keyword has in Adwords, not the search engines.

High competition means there are a lot of people bidding on the keyword in Adwords.

The Google keyword tool was built for PPC marketers, remember?

Yeah i don't pay any attention to that either when selecting keywords to target. I just pay attention to number of searches and then analyse that keyword further with other software.

Out of interest does anyone know how to get back to the old keyword tool i don't like the new one too much.
