Using The Canonical Tag..

Hi,

I'm about to implement the canonical tag into our corporate websites - I've gained an understanding of what it does and how it works but I have one question:

Say I have a website for example "www.website-example.com/TheSoftware.aspx" - this website is the company website with a brief description of a piece of software we offer.

We then have a dedicated website for example "www.TheSoftware.com" using the same brief information but with obviously a lot more content about the software.

Could I use the canonical tag on the company website linking to the appropriate, more important software website? e.g:

<head>
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.thesoftware.com"/>
</head>

I'm sorry if I haven't made sense of why I'm trying to explain! :p

    I've just read a post from Matt Cutts stating that you can't link a canonical tag to an external domain - fair enough, but are there any other techniques I can use to provide more relevance to the more software website than the one that simply has a brief description of software.

      That's right, you can't add a canonical tag in the header of your company domain, referencing an external link to your dedicated software website.

      If you want to provide more relevance to the dedicated page about your software, just link to it from your company website with a call to action and any keywords you think are relevant..

      IE: Company Website..

      Overview of the software... blah blah..

      For more detailed information on this software, please visit Main Keyword Software Website.

      Just ensure that you have unique content on both domains and point more links to your software website.

      The steps above will ensure more relevance to the software website..
