How effective are backlinks from free blogs

How effective are backlinks from free blogs or similar services? Is it a good idea to publish unique and good articles on free blog services? I though to register to some free blog services and publish unique content related to my niche and put 1-2 links within the body content. Yes I know they are PR n/a pages but I think Google finally index those pages and their backlinks. I have used also Angela's (Angela Edwards) backlinking method but I noticed that Google doesn't index those profile etc pages. Waste of time.

    I use blogger. The more posts and the more frequently you post the better. A free blog can gain in page rank if you build backlinks to it. that will in turn help your main site.
