Can Your Rankings Drop if You Change Your Back Link Strategy?

Hi Guys
I have a site that is ranked well for specific keywords but the home page is displayed on the SERPs for those keywords. I have other subpages where those specific keywords would be more appropriate for.

So if I start linking with those specific keyword anchor text links to those sub pages from other websites instead of the home page, would I risk losing rankings then? What I hear is that if a page is ranked high then if you all of a sudden change to point to another URL, then Google will recognize that new URL and that new URL may have less links pointing to it, so therefore the rankings could drop...What is the best thing to do here?

thanks guys for your help...Truly appreciate your expert advice...

Nah, I have a few one-page wonders which I've updated a long time ago and they rank well. Of course the keywords aren't those big ones but still..

I mean if a company has an official site - with address etc, just a profile page then why should they update it every time? And it still will be the most relevant result!

Chloe, Google won't replace the homepage with the subpage until it is seen to be more relevant. If you are already ranking the homepage on the first page of results then 'in theory' the sub-page won't cause the homepage to drop rankings until it overtakes it.

When it is seen as more relevant then it is highly likely that you'll have a dual (indented) listing on the front page. This can be great for your click through rate.

Nothing can be guarenteed though - but I would personally go for it.

One thing you can do is link from the article on your home-page to the sub-page using the relevant anchor text. This is a good way of telling Google that *this* is the page you go to to find out more about 'anchor text'.

New sites will often have the homepage listed ahead of the more relevant sub-page until the backlinks (relevancy) are taken into account.
