SEOs/Wordpress Users - Page or Posts?

I'm working on building out an authority site in the health niche. I've been batting back and forth between pages and posts. I figured that with a PAGE setup, I can have category pages which I optimize for keywords. Those category pages would like out to related articles in the category. So there ends up being a tiered structure.

A friend of mine recommended that I just use posts and put those into categories with wordpress. This seems like an easy way to set it up and just use related posts plugin so that related posts are linked, but then it doesnt really allow me to optimize the categories. I've heard from other people say that pages are better than posts too in terms of diluting link juice, but I didnt get the full explanation as to why.

SO...thought I would post here and see what other people recommend. For those of you doing well with authority sites, what kind of WP setup do you prefer and why?

    shouldn't really matter. you can optimize them both just the same with plugins or manually. i use pages for my 'about' 'contact' 'disclaimer' type stuff and just post articles or whatever else by... well, posting them!

    i think of pages as more permanent for some reason. and no one will find them in a keyword or category search if i don't want them to!

    • Agreed. It doesn't matter also as long as your your site is well optimized and in high quality content your rankings will be stable.
  • I've done it both ways.

    What I've more recently is used a page for a target page and then a post category that was related.

    Then I have a custom page template where I can enter the category ID for the related post category and it will display a list of the 10 most recent posts . . . basically creating a silo with the page being the head.

    It really depends on the client's site.
  • It's easier to rank for 1 keyword phrase per PAGE than have a page with multiple posts and multiple keywords.
  • I set my sites up with this structure... Pages are my main keyword rich articles, my posts point back to my pages, my pages point to products. This helps tremendously for my internal link structure and helps rankings.

  • I prefer to use posts since using pages on a large scale tends to go against the grain of how WordPress works.

    For example, posts ping while pages don't. You can use a plugin to get them to do so but, it means adding yet another plugin and making sure it's configured right, doesn't conflict, etc.

    Also, if you use Platinum SEO it will automatically give posts the canonical tag which eliminates any potential problems with Google recognizing the wrong page (archives vs. index page vs. main post).
  • Is there a way I can still use posts (which seem a bit easier to add/optimize/manage, etc) while still maintaining a tiered structure? I'm not visualizing what this would look like. Anyone care to share examples of how they are using wordpress with Silos/Categories/Tiers?
  • I use pages for my main keywords as I believe they rank better than post, and use post as sub keywords that are related to the main keywords.
  • This is an example of the custom page template we were talking about to use a page for the main target and listing all the related category posts at the bottom of the page.
