SLD Domains - SERP killer???

Hi All

Hoping someone has had some experience with Second Level Domains.

Im looking to build a niche membership site specifically for Calgary, Canada. Using the SLD, I can get the exact keyword match I want. All keywords I target are going to be for Calgary too.

1) Do SLD's affect SERP's in a bad way?
2) A lot of traffic I get for region specific sites comes through google, not that countries google, IE: google.com not google.ca

There are two ways for me to do this. If my main search is "Calgary Kites"

1) SLD Domain making it ***.calgarykites.ab.ca
2) .com Domain making it ***.kitesincalgary.com

Given the option, which is better in your experience?

    I'm wondering the same thing. I have a new website in the works that I plan on utilizing the subdomains to their full potential! It seems that subdomains are dominating Google Places.

    IMO it should be along the same lines as if you had a domain with hyphens.

    examples:
    ps3-game-console-reviews.com

    ps3.gameconsolereview.com
    xbox.gameconsolereview.com

    I am really liking the subdomains b/c I've got a great niche that I can easily build up a TLD with the subdomains basically making my targeted keyword long tail keyword search engine friendly domains that I would have targeted!

    If this makes any sense... sorry I'm tired!

    Sorry I didn't answer your question. If you're going after calgary kites you could always do something like calgary.kitekits.com or something along those lines....

    I am doing something similar with a site Wayne.
    Here is something to think about.

    I have a domain name com-click-now-for.info
    I then add pages as subdomains. For example

    calgarykites.com-click-now-for.info

    First thing the visitor and the robots see is calgarykites.com (then a call to action as an aside)

    Why not buy the domain name

    com-calgarykites.com or
    com-calgary.com or .net etc and add subdomains.
