Outranking Authority Sites???

Okay,

I have found a bunch of keywords that I intend building sniper sites on. But I need a little clarity from the SEO experts...

Many of the sites ranking in the top 10 in the SERP's are authority sites. But they are only ranking based on their authority. Most of these sites do not have the keyword in the URL/Title/H1/Description. And there aren't many backlinks pointing to the specific page that is ranking. In fact, in most cases the keyword is strewn sporadically within the content of the page that is ranking.

Am I wasting my time targeting these keywords, and trying to outrank these authority sites or is there potential?

Thanks!

My rule of thumb .. if it doesn't have any sitewide-links you can outrank it quite easily

Anyway, with some good keyword optimization and good backlinks you can outrank wikipedia and other sites easily, but you need some relevant backlinks.

Hey random question do wordpress menu links count for these purposes as sitewide links? Great comment.

    1. Provide MORE relevant content
    2. Provide MORE resources
    3. Build MORE backlinks
    than your competitors.

I love when I see a page rank 8 site, ranking with a single article on a page rank 0 page with very little content

Those guys are hardcore about ranking pages in the SERPs.

They have like 100 internal pages per keyword that all include, inurl, intitle, H1, anchor-text the whole on-page bag-o-tricks!

I have one keyword I'm ranking #2 because Ehow won't budge, those sorry SOBs!
Yeah it's funny what people think of authority sites and equate them with just
tossing a few backlinks up and voila!

Aint gonna happen. Until you make your site a better authority.

You can outrank them for some words that they are not fully (or wanting to be)
      optimized for.

    Hi,

If they are not optimized for the target keyword and they have only a few backlinks then there is chance to outrank them =) just optimize your post with the target keyword and build backlinks to your site and you should be fine =)

I am facing the same challenges. I found a few keywords that I am going to try ranking for. The page one SERP has a ton of PR0 subpages with very few backlinks to those pages. But all of those competing subpages are on VERY old (6+ years) domains, along with thousands of indexed pages, and thousands of backlinks to other pages in the domain. The pages I have to compete with, on the other hand, look pretty weak.

    Hmmmm.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am probably going to build 1 or 2 of these sites and give it 3+ months, and then evaluate from there.

I will post my results after the 3 month period.

      Thanks again everyone!

My experience with this is good links, keyword relevant content and time.

For example, I was checking on a site this morning, a 2 year old .info that's up for renewal this month (this is about the only time I do extensive reviews on my sites, BTW). It ranks just below the corporate site of the product line it's reviewing/promoting. It is virtually impossible that it will beat the corp site but as #2 with a double entry it gets very nice traffic and it outranks a lot of other review and affiliate sites.

The reason it's ranking well is that it has good links, both those I've built to promote the site as well as some natural links from various blogs and forums, the content is very relevant to the keyword (but isn't anything Pulitzer Prize winning though) and both the site and links have had time to mature.

Mate, I have done it myself. I left behind webmd and i am above it. Its not really difficult to be honest. You just need high quality backlinks and make sure the backlinks are from different sources.
