I heard that before ebay ( I think it was) launched they did massive backlinking (am I getting this right? or was it another promotion thing?) How would I do that for my website that I am going to build soon? I already have the domain name.

Dont build back links too fast. Others might disagree but I have been "sandboxed" at least 3 times by doing it. It's better to build slowly and consistently.

    Cheers

Build your backlinks at a consistent but steady pace. You don't need tons of backlinks to 'launch' the website, I would be more concerned about getting traffic to it first. While you are getting traffic to it through means of your choosing like PPC, article marketing, etc. I would do backlinking across social bookmarking sites as well as high pagerank blogs within your niche. Even if you got a ton of backlinks overnight your site wouldn't immediately rank anyway so slow and steady wins the race.

Backlinks are not the ONLY means to rank high. There are many other things to concentrate on.

Interesting theory if you build some backlinks before launching maybe you get indexed faster

What you can do, and what I have noticed that works, you can use your (future) website name, or your brand name, and write it in high PR pages with content relevant to yours. One of my clients was amoung 5 first pages of Google for many keywords like "Electrolux washing machines" etc. I have noticed that he was submiting his company profile on many websites before he had a web page. So none of this profiles have link to his web site but I think that Google is "smart" enough to recognize that. Don't take me for a word, I'm not Google, but that is what It looks to me.

Thanks for the advice but I was looking for more of a "how to" is it just regular backlinking with my domain name? I also heard that if you backlink too fast it might seem like a program is doing it and then you become penalized. I heard that 100 per day has a bigger chance of going unnoticed.
I still dont fully understand how to backlink though.

For a "big" launch site, I add content and build links months in advance. Always build trust etc rather than just hitting the ground cold on launch.

Yep! Just like Apple and all of their wonderful new gadgets. The new Verizon Iphone hasn't hit the shelf yet, but I'm pretty positive that apple is receiving some nice backlinks with the anchor text "Verizon Iphone". If you look at the big picture online, you will realize that you shouldn't worry about how many backlinks you are blasting out.

For small sites or blogs, I think it is better to just build backlinks after your site is launch.
