How much link juice flows to a linked page?

Hi guys

Im thinking of changing one of my url's to better compete for a keyword. At the minute im ranking about position 13 but i ve only just started to try for this keyword, but the number 1 spot is an old site and ranks highly for any similarly related keywords so id imagine it will take a bit of beating.

If i change the url (from /anxiety-2.html to /hypnosis-for-anxiety) i assume ill lose any page rank and therefore to get the pr up again, ill need to link to the newpage from the home page (pr2) and the other pages which are pr1.The current page has pr1 (as do a few other pages on my site) but my home page has pr2.

So my question is: Are just a couple of outbound links from pr2 enough to get a pr1 quite quickly? Will linking to the new page get it back up to a pr1 relatively quickly -or will the temporary drop in pr make it all not worth doing anyway, cos ill lose any progress my current page already has?

thanks

From my experience, I would say that on-page-SEO is about 100 times less important than the number and quality of back links your site has. You can do only so much on-the-page, while the number of links is nearly unlimited. Just keep on adding good links.

      Hi hypnoderby,

All you need to do is put in place a 301 Permanent Redirect from the old URL to the new URL. All of your PageRank will be transfered from the old URL to the new URL.

This is the best advice and I would definitely follow dburks advice. One small caveat I would just like make clear is that not all of the pr will pass in a 301. This was finally cleared up about 6 months ago by google (ie Matt Cutts)

Even though there is some pr loss, it is still the best option you have when changing page locations so it is still solid advice

dburk is right. 301 redirects pass all of the old page's link juice to the new page. Don't forget however to continue to build links for the new page.
