A few killer backlinks VS. thousands of so-so ones?

It's been dawning on me lately that you only need a handful of high page PR backlinks to shoot your PageRank way up. Just a few days ago, a Warrior stumbled upon an example of this:

richardsonmurphy.com . au

The page has a measly 3 backlinks to it, including one from WarriorForum.

PageRank of 3.

dburk figured out that it was because another high PR site had linked to it on its homepage, which singlehandedly shot its PageRank way up.

So here's my question:

As internet marketers competing for that #1 spot in medium-to-highly competitive niches, does it really make sense for us to invest all this time and money doing our usual dofollow blog commenting, profile linking, web 2.0 property creating, etc etc, when all we need to do is invest our time (or money) in just a few killer backlinks?

It's about opportunity cost, isn't it?

What's your take on this?

    Yeah some of those backlinks can do wonders. I had a site that I was getting backlinks for and it wasn't doing real well in G. Then I got a link at a popular site right before they closed the doors on open submissions for links (making music niche) so my site stayed at the top, it's probably still there, not sure, this was years ago. Anyways after I got that link my site really moved so I think there's something to it for sure.

      the problem is that there is no push button piece of software that can give you high Pr page links (that are not bombarded by spammers). The only way to do this is to work at it and thats where many people just go on to something else because they don't want to do any work that goes beyond running a bot.

        Can you elaborate on this? "Work at it" in what way?

    This is absolutely true. Although the Google algorithms for link quality change all the time, a few high PR links is definately a lot better than loads of low level backlinks. But you have to remember, it is a risky business when relying on just a few strong backlinks because they can just as easily dissapear.

    If you can build up lots of high quality links on an ongoing basis it is the best reward for your time. Google likes permanant backlinks nearly as much as ongoing backlinks - Do this better than your competition and you will steadily overtake all spots including number one (I've seen this happen countlessly)
