Backlinks and total exasperation!

Hi guys,

Recently I joined two forums associated with my industry. In my email signature I put my website.

I then got a nasty message from both saying I was banned for life for spamming.

I was hurt and confused and had no idea what they were talking about. I couldn't even log in or reply to their emails to ask them what the hell they were talking about.

Then I worked it out- the url in the email signature was regarded as "commerical" and therefore spam. Yes of course it is. (Sarcastic.)

So now, in my industry, I understand that people get poopy if you try and leave your url in your email sig- then how are you supposed to get good quality backlinks?

In my industry you can't have your home page url within the email sig- they are all like that.

I don't get how an email sig url is regarded as spam. It's not as if I'm contacting every single member in the forum with penis enlargement or discounts of the Canadian pharmacy, I'm just putting ONE url in my own signature. LOL

Geez!

God this is so frustrating!! I am totally exasperated.

Amy

    Hi there Amy

there's a number of easy ways to get started getting backlinks.

    Firstly, there's article submissions.

You could look at sites like:

    ezinearticles

    goarticles

    buzzle

You could also look at article submission services such as

    SubmitYourArticle

    FastSubmitArticles

Next you can look at places like

    Freetrafficsystem

where you can submit spun articles for a particular niche.

Next you could look at blog commenting - finding blogs that are relevant in your niche and leaving quality comments (as much as an article as long as it's relevant. It's better to provide a quality comment rather than junk that won't get approved).

Next you can look at contacting site owners in your niche to see if they are willing to do a link exchange.

    I hope this helps.

    regards and good luck

    Hey Amy,
You first need to spend time in the forums before adding a URL in your sig... They do this to prevent spammers from creating accounts simply for backlink building. Once you have been a contributor for a while you can then add your URL in your sig. Most Forums talk about this in their Sticky Files. Hope that clarifies things for you.

I hear you Angela. Don't let it bug you though. I just steer clear of such forums and go to those where I will be accepted and allowed to contribute. There are plenty of good forums and blogs to comment on out there.

Do you know the one in which WRITING IN ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING AND ITS BAD MANNERS?

It´s pretty much the same. Some forums and sites have the standard rules and then they have their own "nettiquette".

It is a good idea to both read the FAQ and all those "getting started threads" before posting AND to make your first 5-10 comments without any links at all, until you get a feel for the community you are joining.

Case in point: the homeworking forum. I once joined in a thread that discussed how to get started with traffic. I made a somewhat detailed reply with things I had done before and how to use some of the general tools, you know, squidoo, youtube, google... well known sites. I posted the actual url of those sites ( literally www.google.com, www.squidoo.com and so on)

The links got taken out I got a reprieve for posting them.

Did I benefit in any way from those links? no

Would it have been of use to a complete newcomer to see them? perhaps

The etiquette of the forum says absolutely no links other than on your profile or run the post through a mod before publishing for approval.
It might sound silly form the outside but if you join a community you need to learn and apply whatever rules they have no matter how hard to understand they are for you at the beginning.

Of course option B is simply not getting into that community altogether.

Another case in point: Warrior Forum: a community of internet marketers. Affiliate marketing is a big part of internet marketing, do we agree? no affiliate links permitted. You might like the rule or not. You might understand the reasoning or not. At the end of the day it´s a rule of the community and you have to abide by it or leave. No one pushes you to stay.

You go to the WP forums and they see pretty much everyone from this community as evil spammers. Many WF members see DP as the drain of IM.

Rules, regulations, secret codes, it´s a wild world out there but if you think this is bad try flying to Beirut with no baggage at all, a suit and dark glasses, then you´ll know how important it is to know the environment you get in (and this comes from a friend of mine that is Lebanese born and bred.)

        Just my 2 cents.

I agree with what has said above. get a prescence in the forum and then check out the rules about signatures. Some forum administrators wait to see who dives in to the signature pages immediately after signing in.

Thanks everyone much appreciated. Colleen, I'll be taking all your suggestions on board- thanks heaps! I really don't have the time in my life to join forums and build up a rep before I am allowed to have my signature in there. I'd much rather do the article marketing, then get outside and go for a bike ride, have a game of tennis with my husband, than worry about a lot of "building rep" stuff.
You guys have been great in helping me and I really appreciate very, very much.

If you buy backlink packages make sure they are not using blackhat tactics and are varying the types of links, keywords and submitting only Manual Backlinks. These will help you much more than just buying a random package. I would also reccomend using a service like ODesk or Backlinkteam so that you can get a dedicated team of backlinkers who know what they are doing. I prefer backlinkteam as they have provided the most consistent results for me. I had one site ranked on 35+ Keywords in just two weeks for my main keywords. Cant beat results like that lol.

There are other techniques to get back links. As few mention above like Article Submission, Directory Submission, Blog Commenting, Content Sharing, Social Bookmarking - you can also get back links not only Forum signatures.
