Keyword Specific Domain and Decimal Numbers

Let's say you are purchasing a keyword specific domain for a product like: 1.2" screwdriver. Would you purchase a domain such as 12screwdriver.com or simply leave the number out of it and just incorporate the 1.2 into the title, H1, metas, and content?

I would just leave out the number and just use screwdriver.com

    What are people searching for?

If they are not searching for your domain with or without the numbers I don't think it really matters?

If both have 2000 searches or more a month buy them both!

People are searching with the decimal number. Without that decimal number the domain just becomes about screwdrivers, not a specific size of screwdriver.

I just had an interesting thought, now I'm not saying it will work but....

buy the domain with the second digit of the screwdriver then put the page on a subdomain

1.2screwdriver.com Some guru might tell you if it will work or not.

You know what you're going to have to do to get the answer? Experiment.

You could by the domain name 2inchscrewdriver.com then add the number 1 as a subdomain to give you a URL of

    1.2inchscrewdriver.com

What I do is go for the more generic exact match (screwdriver.com) or, if it isn't available and there's no established authority site using the EMD, I go for something like screwdriverbasics.com or screwdrivertools.info and optimize individual pages and link building to the target long tail keyword(s).

I think getting the .com or .net of it is the best, but if they are no longer available one can go for screwdriverkit.com or screwdriverset.com and check if people are searching for the keyword before going for the registration and after that to write contents on the domain and backlinks

I agree with Rustin, have a look at what people search for in google keyword tool. Definitely buy .com - that's the most liked by google and people searching for what they need.

I'm not a big fan of hyphens but at the end of the day if you optimize a site well it will rank regardless of dots hyphens or numbers. The other thing is to do searches in Google and see what matches in bold it shows up. I think I'd go broad ie generic so you capture more keys then optimize on page for 1.2

I've actually run across this by accident. I was searching for "web 2.0 button" and found this domain was ranked:

    Code:
    www.web2.0button.com
It's at the top of page 2 for that term, so I don't know if it is treated as an exact match domain in terms of rankings, although Google does highlight the domain as a match (including the period).

Wow, that's awesome that you found a live example. Thanks for sharing that. Since Google highlights it as a keyword match I would assume they see it as such, but I could be wrong. I wish there was more info about this.
