Why do link wheels work better than just linking directly?

Say you have 5 Web 2.0 properties linking to your main site, and each of those 5 sites has 20 backlinks to it. This gives you a total of 105 backlinks in your link wheel.

Alternatively, let's say you have those same 105 sites, but instead they're all pointing directly to your main site. So no link wheel, just linking directly.

Why is it that link wheels are believed to be more effective? Wouldn't you want to cut out the middle man and just all those sites to point to your site directly? It seems to me like link wheeling is missing out on a lot of potential PageRank flow, but it still seems to work well.

What am I missing here?

Then why do SEOs spend so much time creating them? Are you saying they're all just misguided and wasting their time (and wasting their PageRank)?

it depends who do you ask. Some people will swear by them some will tell you they don't work. With link wheels you are pushing more juice towards your money site but that is dependent on how you structure your wheel.

This is not how a linkwheel works. The principle behind a linkwheel is to point each site that is part of a linkwheel to each other (Your site A to your site B to your site C ... while A, B and C point to your money site). This has the tendancy to give site A, B and C more backlinks (thus, more PR) which will supposedly give more weight to the backlink coming from A, B and C to your money site. These backlinks that you give to A, B and C can't be given anyway to your money site since it already receive one from that site.

As to why you would build independant backlinks (backlinks not coming from your linkwheel) to parts of your linkwheel instead of directly to your money site, well ... to help the rank of your linkwheel sites (thus, the value of the backlink to your money site), and to try to "hide" the fact that it is a linkwheel ...

Agreed with you and that's the link wheel method works, This technique shows that relevancy is one of the most important aspect.

Linkwheel basically give your links more weight and hold higher in the rankings than straight linking.

They do still work but not like they used to in the older days now that Google is up to snuff on that tactic.

People now days are creating mini nets or random nets to futher hide the structure of the links.

Problem with this method is that you can spen a lot of time creating the wheel or nets and each link is dependant to another in one way or another so if Google snags one links your wheel/net is reduced in strength and thus your links will hold less weight in the rankings.

I will say that if you plan your structure out very carefully and build the wheel/net slowly by not slapping up spokes fast then you will have a better chance of flying under the radar but to me this tatic just takes to long and it is a gamble on how long the wheel/net will hold water so to speak before you are finally detected and having the whole thing burn down.

You're missing the point that the 20 "subsidiary sites" around each of the 5 sites can link to your main site as well as to their appropriate "spoke site".

The idea is that the links from those 5 sites to your main site will be "worth more" because they are themselves each sites with 20 backlinks.

The thing to be careful of links (even non-reciprocal ones) between those other sites: less formalised structures with some randomised cross-links may do better.

Many people believe that entirely formal/symmetrical structures are easily recognised and to some extent (maybe even to a great extent) downgraded in "link value" by search engines.

Link wheel is a network of websites which are directly or non-directly point to a website and of course it should be more effective than only a few number of links. Each of the link in link wheel have a value and when all of them link to a website, the value of each of them will be added to the value of the main site and it can help the main site to rank better. I hope i could explain it good.
