How to check fakepagerank?

I am interested in a domain for sale, that has a pr 5. however it only shows 4 backlinks so my initial though was that is has fake pagerank.

From what I understood the way to find out to see if it is fake is to type in info:thedomainname.com in google, and see if the actual domain comes up or the one redirecting the pagerank. I did this and the actual domain does show up, however I still find it weird tho that a site with only 4 links has a pr5.

Is there any way of being sure weather it has a fake pagerank or not?

  • There are tools that you can check fake pagerank with them. For example:
    Fake Rank Checker - Check for Fake PageRank
  • The info: search is a good one. As for only having 4 links, have you checked the pr of the pages the links are coming from? If they are good high pr links than you have your answer.

    Also what tool are you using to check for links. using the link: operator at google will only give you a small sample of what they really have. Use yahoo site explorer if you already haven't.

      when entering the url in that tool it tells me it is not valid, however checking with some other big famous sites it also tell me it's not valid, so I am not sure if this tool is actually working

      Yes I Indeed checked it in the yahoo explorer. it has 2 links to a pr3, these links are still working and it is mentioning a pr6 link however that link does not seem to be on the site anymore. so all it's got is 2 pr3 links, a pr- link and a pr6 link that is not showing anymore.

      you think it would be save to purchase it?

      You can purchase a domain, but you cannot purchase the PageRank. PageRank is not assigned to domains, it is assigned to individual web documents (technically individual URLs). PageRank is based entirely upon the pattern of inbound links to your individual URL. So the PageRank is only as real and permanent as the links that point to the individual URL.

      Anyone who owns or controls pages with high PR can point links to the index page of any domain to temporarily boost PR displayed in the Google Toolbar. If the seller, or anyone associated with the seller, are the source of the links, you should be extremely cautious and assume PR will evaporate the moment you transfer the funds.

      You shouldn't value the domain based on PR unless you are certain that the PR is derived from a broad range of webmasters that aren't likely to remove their links after ownership changes. The PR isn't likely to remain very long unless the original website content is also transfered in the purchase and you retain the previous internal link structure of that website.

  • why don't you check it on Check Page Rank! . this tool will help you to check the fake page rank.. Google PageRank Checker - Check Google page rank instantly may help this. you can crosscheck between pagerank checker website. if the result is the same, then that's it.

    • Be careful when purchasing a domain for PR. The htaccess files of another domain can be modified to "transfer" PR (temporarily) and it would not show up as fake PR or as a backlink. Some people do this for SEO, but some unethical sellers do this as well. And like Don said if the link or pages that was passing PR disappear the PR will eventually disappear as well.
  • There are many sites offering valid page rank service. You can use checkpagerank.net for this purpose. I normally use this site to check Fake pagerank. Or you can use firefox addon SEOquake to check pageranks
  • Many tools are available free and effective better check try then differentiate the performance of each method.
