Yet another google change....

Eesh. LOL. Guess they are worried about Bing taking over.

If you search on anything, you now see a "spyglass" on the right.

Hover over either that or even the result, and you get a thumbnail of the site with the keywords highlighted.

Do you think it's a good thing?

    • I don't know how the term spammers changed to mean webmasters.
      But I digress.

How on earth is a person going to know who is a spammer by looking at
a thumbnail of a webpage???? Because my preview looks good I must
not be a spammer? Because my preview is bad, I am one?

      I don't get it.

Once again, people take a google tweak and go off on a tangent about how
      the world is changing.

      Relax. It's not.

Just shows the power google has over folks. Like a hypnotist....

    • Wow. I only asked to start a discussion (I hadn't noticed that someone else also remarked on it)... didn't expect the word "spammers" to put up such a response so I removed it from the original post.

I thought we were all professionals here and could voice an opinion/ask a question??

Actually I'm not the first person who remarked on that.... a few SEO news sites have made comments on it as well, considering Bing has been moving up in the ranks of search.

I'm not stupid enough to think that google is afraid of Microsoft taking over the web... but obviously they realize its a feature that set Bing apart - and obviously people liked it.

For me, the thing I "do" like, is the hover lets you peek at the sites to find something faster...

the thing I don't like is a lot of times you can't truly see if its something you're interested in without going to it. (Although, I think seeing the automatic opt in boxes might deter people from going there if they think they have to opt in to access it - that might change things).

(And as a note for those who seemed to have immediately attacked my original remark re: "spammers"... all I meant was those fake directory / search engine results harvesters, that when you go to them all they are is almost a replica of google results - not true content, although I haven't seen those as much lately so maybe google got rid of them).

    • Nothing is impossible you know!

If Bing creates some sort of innovative offer that goes viral anything can happen. For instance, if they design a browser (with their SE set as the default of course) that supercedes Chrome and Firefox and find a way to get it to spread virally, anything can happen.

But it all depends on their own innovativeness.

    • One thing that I have noticed about preview is that it excludes Adsense in the previews. I rather like that because if someone is previewing my page they don't see the ads until they get there.

Maybe it's just me but I feel like if people see ads on the preview they might be less likely to click the result.

Anyhow I doubt very many people will make use of preview unless it becomes a popular feature or gets some major attention. The little magnifying glass just really isn't that noticeable and I doubt regular searchers will even notice it.
    • There's no way Bing's going to get too far without major leaps in innovation. Something Microsoft hasn't been famous for for many years.

The question is, who's going to be taking the web into the direction of web 3.0?

I remember Clusty, that was a cute little attempt

  • I dont think google is even slightly scared of anything bing or yahoo has to offer. take all the search engines together google takes 75-85% of the market the rest split the scraps .

  • Its a nice cute feature...saves having to click through sites and find out what they have
  • This spyglass is for watching a preview of each link and i don't like and use it in Google and Bing. I think its a useless feature and most people don't use it.
  • I think it might be 24 hour CCTV or something. The government and google are after me...
  • Its there to better the user experience!
  • If a website looks bad, the CTR and the number of visitors will decrease. So, will become important to have a well designed website.

    • This was my thought exactly, I am setting up some adsense sites right now and I was going to use a regular not-so-pretty adsense theme that gets good conversions, however I'm considering using one that is more "aesthetically" pleasing due to this.

  • Jacob, it is showing Adsense on my previews too.
  • All these changes are making Google more "cluttered". People like Google because of it's simplicity.
