Best AdWords Techniques and Practices

Hi All,

I've been using and studying Google AdWords for over a year now but I was wanted to start a discussion on peoples opinions, best practices, hints and tips of using Google AdWords.

Landing pages was a big topic I wanted to cover, as well as how to get the highest possible quality score for my keywords - a lot of the time I only manage to get mine between 4 - 6, although the adverts always seem to be perfect and are targeting rich and well searched keywords.

I was also thinking of this idea of creating dedicated landing pages for each advert (even if a similar page exists, I'd use the canonical tag) - creating the page purely for the user comfort/navigation and the keyword relevance to the advert.

    I select my keywords based on what Google's keyword tool says about my site. I usually start with around 200. Then I break those keywords up into groups of about 5, based on relevance to each other. These are my adgroups. Each adgroup gets its own landing page optimized for those 5 keywords. Doing it this way gets me a lot of 7's. To go above 7 I have to get a good CTR.

    Already covered many times / to many options / or people with ideas / some that change like the wind, the biggest problem is the term land page / use land site and start to think like that and you will solve most of your q score problems / + understand G's terms / acceptable sites / policies.

      Hello,

      As a general rule, I would say you can optimize one page with 3 keywords or phrases. I would recommend starting with one or two. Depending on who you talk to, your percentage of keywords in your text should be between three and five percent of the total content on the site. I have seen site tops with percentages as high as ten. There are some free online tools that can tell you the percentage of each word on your site.

          Im trying to set-up a adwords campiagn to test a product im going to be releasing, at the moment im getting at QS of 3/10 & 4/10 and my ads arent showing. Ive based the keyword on my landing page by using google keyword tool, does anyone know why my ads arent showing?

          I normally use Keyword Density checks on SeoMoz/SEOBook etc

    I think its a good idea to make several landing pages and create pages as you said. In my opinion, it worths that you try it and see the results and compare it with your previous experiments. I myself have not experienced it yet.

      The problem I saw with this though is that similar pages already exist (but in another context), so I may start using improved versions of the same pages for the landing pages and start implementing the canonical tag on to these pages.
