Blog commenting is good if the comments are dofollow. I get a lot of spam too even though I use Akismet but I just mark them as spam, also my blog comment are notdofollow.

Garbage comments just add garbage to your site. Not good for the users or the SERPs.

I have comments enabled on my blogs, but I do not allow the spammers to junk them up. Any spam that gets through Akismet is marked as spam and deleted.

They all help but I would say that web 2.0 and general SEO, (articles,social bookmarks) is better.

From an SEO point of veiw, Google loves to see comments, plus it adds to your content, thus boosting your ranking. In addition, it adds social proof to your blogs. Finally, comments allow you to tweak your next message, so yeah, I would say comments are useful.

Blog comments are a way for you to directly engage the very people you are looking to draw in with your blog aren't they? How much value they have depends on how you use them

If the comments are relevant to your site posting, then you should be getting a back link to your site which is good.

Comments do help if they are legit comments and not just spam. Some of my blogs are loaded with comments, others have none at all. I have some set to not allow comments.

I have most of my blogs set to moderate all comments to keep the spam out that Akismet doesn't catch. It's more time consuming to moderate, but moderating takes less time than having to read and delete spam after it's already posted.

Nope. Delete them and don't give them a second thought. If it looks like spam, if it looks like automated chatter, if it looks like a fake trackback, if it doesn't look like a genuine comment, delete it and forget about it.

Real people with real comments can add value. The junk comments add no value.

I seem to be getting tons of these spam comments as well, on a totally unrelated blog.

I didn't think I was the only one, but sometimes I get a victim-complex :rolleyes:

The majority of comments I get are in 3 categories: "Nice blog, happy for info you're sharing...", "What theme/platform/etc., are you using?" and the ever-popular "Why did you delete my post? My comment is x% more useful than these others - I'm going to post it again <insert ad for product/service>."
Minor variations on these themes make up 98% of what I've attracted.

I've barely run across an email address that appeared to successfully route an email response and some of the websites in the signatures are downright weird. I've tried to follow moderation rules as suggested in Copyblogger.com and various other sources, which seem to agree; and despite having a Comments Policy And A Post Dedicated to Spammers, I still have xx of Spam in the queue to review/delete.

It's taking me a lot of time to consistently attract respondents who have something relevant to say. I guess this is one of those areas in IM where all the strategies for traffic/quality linkbuilding, etc. just have to patiently be followed.

Blog comments are quite useful. I think that it increases PR and also it shows that it generates traffic. But one thing I don't personally like about blog commenting, is that when people adds irrelevant comments and spams.

Indeed it is one way to syndicate my site, however it must be done properly to get quality backlinks, commenting on relevant sites is important.

I also love to do blog commenting, if the comments are relevant and increase your blog value than there is no need to delete them.

It is really annoying the amount of spam you get makes it hard sometime to weed out just in case you delete someones comment who has actually taken the time to write to you.

Bull ****! Has anyone heard of the term "getting more done with less? If you have read the book " The Mafia Manager," you should be familiar with a phrase that says "study conventional wisdom, then shun it." I believe enabling Blog commenting is one of such online conventional wisdom and i've decided to shun it. Only 20% of your total readers will care to comment and of out those 20% comments, 80% of it will be spam, so i don't think it's worth the effort. I'll suggest you turn off Blog comments, it will save you the stress. Am i alone in this "no Blog commenting? My answer is no. Some successful Bloggers i know don't allow comments on their blogs and Steve Pavlina is one of such Bloggers. So take your stand now.

I think blog comments can be very valuable to the site owner and to the readers. Many times i find more valuable information in the responses then I do in the original blog post.

Akismet doesn't like me. I've never spammed anyone in my entire life, but blogs that have akismet immediately send me into the bloggers spam filter. Some of them fish me out, some of them don't. It's incredibly frustrating. I put a LOT of thought into my comments, and than they are just gone.

I've honestly stopped replying to a lot of blogs because of this. I emailed akismet directly, no response yet.

Blog comments are good. These are some of their benefits:

1. Search engines index comments and you can get traffic because of comments on your blog.

2. They help in building relationship between you and your readers

3. Comments can be used by your readers to pass an important information to you. Some website visitors do not use the Contact Us to send messages to site owners

When you enable blog comments on your website, it helps you to get some more traffic as many webmasters read your articles even for commenting about it. But in other cases, in not really needed. But it depends on your website too. If you are offering very new articles, maybe commenting about them can help you to know your visitor's ideas. But i suggest you to make your comments nofollow and also try it for some months and then if you found it useful, continue it and in other cases, disable it again.

I want to share useful information. Any vicarious promotion should be a distant second at best. Readers should not have to wade through numerous comments of similar content/that don't add to the topic, IMO. As for SEO, I recently heard a story of a woman who had a traumatic experience with an online retailer (US). That retailer claimed he welcomed negative comments about his business since it boosted his ranking in the search engines.
I wonder what will change based on that tidbit...
My blog now has additional plug-ins: Conditional Captcha, http:BL. The spam count has dramatically decreased...remains to be seen if the visits correspond.

I usually use blog commenting others say that it is not worth it as I've observed in this thread but I should say that Its how you use it to make it effective at all.
