My site is 3 weeks old...
My anchor text is in the domain..
I'm #5 on Google for my anchor text...
Have great on page SEO (I think)...

HOW DO I GET TO #1???? So frustrated that I keep bobbing up and down at #5-6.

I know backlinks, backlinks...I've got over 300 backlinks so far and two of them are EDU. Is there anything else I can do?

Hi @AFI - Sometimes it just takes a little time. I try to have the mindset that I'm building up my rankings over months instead of weeks.

I would focus on creating some additional content pages around your primary keywords. That will help you start generating additional traffic around the main keyword you want to rank for and at the same time make your website appear even more relevant for the desired keyword.

Since you're site is so new, you could probably just keep creating a bit new content over time and Google will bump you up a few places over time just for being around a bit longer.

Okay let me ask you this. I put the blog on a subdomain like blog.domain.com. So does the content on the blog count as articles on the site?

Absolutely not. The sub-domain is treated as a totally separate site. It will not inherit the main site's domain ranking attributes (like domain authority, domain trust, etc.). Nor do inbound links to the content on the blog's sub-domain contribute to the main site's domain authority, domain trust, etc.

This is why I almost always recommend sub-folders over sub-domains in almost every case.

What are the first four sites doing that you aren't doing? Where are they getting backlinks from and how can you get backlinks from the same places? How aged are their domains? What is the average Page Rank?

Keep these answers in mind as you keep building backlinks to your site. Without knowing what keyword you are targeting, 300 backlinks is fairly low to be reaching to top three positions.

Just keep backlinking, do it steadily over months and don't stop. You will surely see some success in this over time.

If at all possible, to save your sanity, outsource the SEO and start building new sites or contribute to your existing site. People can easily become frustrated by spending all their time ranking one keyword.

Not being able to get in to the top 4 or Top 5 could be due to one of the following reasons.
    1. Over optimized anchor text.
    2. Single anchor text focus while building back links.
    3. Not enough brand links.(site name anchored)
    4. Competitors are doing their stuff well.
Top 5 positions could be a threshold for sites with an unnatural link profiles.
