The way you would know is if you use a stat counter. Here are a few I use:
Google analytics
Statcounter

I like the options which says "keyword analysis" to know which keywords get you the most traffic and also the "came from" where it tells you the link that traffic was sent from.

the yellow ones are the other websites linking or referring to your site ( your backlinks or incoming links)

The blue ones, are also websites, incoming links to the yellow ball ...

The more yellows you get, the better...and if these yellows also have blue
balls linking to them, even better...In the eyes of Google, that makes the yellow ball credible
referrals, which will ultimately result to your site being ranked among the top in Google

The higher you search engine positioning, usually means better traffic ( aim to be in Google's first page)
