What is classed as 'news' in SERPS

Whilst recently looking through some search results i keep noticing that 'news' about x and y often appears on the 1st page. I was wondering what is actually classed as 'news'.

If i submit a press release like many people do, can this actually be classed as news for SERPS results? Or do you ahve to be like a recognised newspaper or similar to be able to get your news featured on SERPS.

IM assuming that a good quality article submitted to the press agencies is very effective as long as it contains verifiable information?

What do you think? or what are your experiences?

thanks guys

What qualifies as news to google, is sites that have been approved to be
included in their news page. The news is not open to everyone, nor is it
    any SEO.

Press releases and google "news" are about as far apart as you can get.
Unless you are a site like the newyorktimes that is already in.

General searches may find some news articles, but still you must be
    part of the news pool.

Now if you could get the NYT to do a press release, well you may have
    something.

Google news will ignore your press release unless it's part of one of their
    chosen news sites.

Your so-called "press release" may be included in organic searches,
but I wouldn't hold my breath.

If you wish your site to be included in news, have a go:
