Where to start on my internet marketing journey?

where to start on my internet marketing journey?
Ive done alot of reading, but before i start I'd like to make a plan so at least im not setup to fail.
Abit about me:
I am a "noob" at internet marketing but not a noob on the internet in general, and ive had my own hosting company before.
I'm thinking i would like to go the route of adsense and niche sites, i build the sites up, people visit click the adds and i get payed. This sounds like what i want, and sounds reasonably easy to maintain, although their are lots of things i need to consider as my first time. I was thinking of making 5 sites and maintaining them manually.
1. Do i go with a website or blog?
2. How do i get traffic to my site without manualy making 1000's of backlinks?
3. Do i use keyword specific URL's or build up a type of "brand site"
4. What internet marketing "tools" do i need (market samurai etc).
5. If there was one good WSO for adsense wordpress blog what would it be?
6. Am i asking the right questions?
Some advise to a newbie from the people already making a living from adsense would be highly appreciated, thank you.
